WHAT WE'RE READING

A cross-section of articles we've read this week about HIV/AIDS, STIs and a wide cross-section of structural and systemic factors impacting HIV/AIDS in Black communities.

Hepatitis

NEW YORK, Sept. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Market for Hepatitis C drugs has grown with a phenomenal rate of more than US$ 13 Billion, in the year 2014 compared to 2013. In the last two years a couple of new drugs have been introduced in the market which has become a huge success and they have captured maximum market share of the Hepatitis C market. Gilead currently dominates the multi-billion dollar Hepatitis C market, but AbbVie has been trying to increase its market share since U.S. regulators approved the marketing of its Viekira Pak. Drug makers are already focusing on introducing new drugs in the market as several drugs are standing in the pipeline. Hepatitis C Drugs is anticipated to be a rosy market for future period.

MSM

Many steps are required between first identifying men who have sex with men (MSM) who are at high risk of HIV and ultimately ensuring they are prescribed and adhere to Truvada (tenofovir/emtricitabine) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Healio reports. Researchers have devised a PrEP "care continuum," modeled after the continuum that has been established with regards to HIV treatment-a concept that has revolutionized the way public health officials perceive the nation's challenges when it comes to getting HIV-positive people tested, linked to medical care, retained in care, on treatment, and to an undetectable viral load.

Science

HIV specialists may be much less likely than hepatologists to screen for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC, the most common form of liver cancer) among those with hepatitis B virus (HBV), Healio reports. Publishing their findings in Clinical Infectious Diseases, researchers analyzed data on 114 people coinfected with HIV and HBV and 225 people monoinfected with hep B who received care at one large, metropolitan academic medical center.

Treatment

Two powerful new drugs that can sharply lower cholesterol are vastly overpriced based on the value they provide, according to a new analysis by an independent organization that evaluates pharmaceutical costs.

Miscellaneous

On Tuesday, 780 patients of an HIV clinic at London's 56 Dean Street were shocked to learn that their names and email addresses had been accidentally shared after an email error. Many of those affected by the email slip express the extreme stress and anxiety the incident has caused them, highlighting that, despite advances in treatment, a positive HIV diagnosis still takes a heavy toll on patients' mental well-being.

Thanks to $4 million in increased federal funding, Jerusalem House will provide permanent, supportive housing to more than 270 additional people affected by HIV/AIDs over the next two years. The grant comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through the City of Atlanta Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program (HOPWA).

The clip is released amid criticism of its trailer, which some say belittled the role of trans activists and people of color in the Stonewall riots.

A proposed rule to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would ban sex discrimination in the health care system, according to a press release from the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), which issued the proposal. Notably, the rule would prohibit discrimination against transgender people.

Founded in May of 1999, the Black AIDS Institute is the only national HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on Black people. The Institute's Mission is to stop the AIDS pandemic in Black communities by engaging and mobilizing Black institutions and individuals in efforts to confront HIV. The Institute interprets public and private sector HIV policies, conducts trainings, offers technical assistance, disseminates information and provides advocacy mobilization from a uniquely and unapologetically Black point of view.

Support the Black Aids Institute through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC# 12320). The Institute holds the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for meeting the highest standards of public accountability.
