Great Opportunities for Students
Last month's newsletter detailed coaching and performance opportunities at the upcoming National Conference for young harpists, including an Honors Ensemble on the opening night concert, master classes, and the Create, Collaborate, Arpeggiate! Youth Ensemble.  Be sure to check the application deadlines below, share with your students, and visit ahsconference.org/youth to participate!

There are also many workshops that offer great value for students of all ages.  Here's just a sampling:

  Creative Practicing with Jessica Siegel
This will empower the harpist to overcome resistance, frustration an boredom when practicing, and will produce positive results.  Research shows that each new skill we learn is the result of the development of new neural connections. We will understand how these connections are built and learn to be more effective and efficient in our practicing.

You Can Memorize with Anne Sullivan
This workshop is designed to help you with the "why" and more importantly, the "how" of memorization so you can
play in any situation with confidence.  It will give practical tips so you can memorize your music more efficiently and with longer, lasting results that will lead to more confident and beautiful performances.

Mastering the Audition Process with Agnes Hall
There will be a panel discussion on applying to college as a harp major. The panel will be comprised of harp teachers from different methodical backgrounds encompassing all sizes of college harp programs.  It will enlighten parents on their role in the audition process and the widely varying financial costs of a music degree.  At the same time, it will give students and teachers the knowledge they need to ensure that the entire application and audition process is a positive experience.

We would like to see as many students as possible be able to take advantage of these Conference opportunities.  Please consider a gift of any amount today to support this youth experience or provide a scholarship for a young harpist.  More information is available online.

Three Exhibit Halls!
We have so many great exhibitors coming to Atlanta, we need three rooms to hold them all!  This is your chance to get totally up to date on the latest harps, music and accessories. Our faithful friends will be there, plus some first-time exhibitors joining us as well. Everyone will be bringing their newest and best products. Get your picture taken on the Harp Column red carpet, watch Dave take a whack at a carbon fiber harp with a hammer or be dazzled by a led stand light.

When you get home from a conference, everyone asks "what great stuff did you see?" Be sure and spend lots time in the exhibits, so you will have plenty to tell them about!

Great Things To Do While Visiting Atlanta
Stone Mountain, day and night -
a great place to celebrate July 4th!

Think about your interests beyond the harp: theme parks, gardens, art, theater, music, museums,  historic battlefields . . . Atlanta's got all of those and then some in its diverse attractions. Downtown Atlanta is home to CNN, The World of Coca-Cola, Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Aquarium and the National Center for Civil & Human Rights. Historic Auburn Avenue marks Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, while neighborhoods like Grant Park, Buckhead, Kennesaw and Marietta claim home to various Civil War sites. Six Flags Over Georgia lies west of the city, while the famed High Museum of Art, Piedmont Park, Atlanta Botanical Garden and Fox Theatre are in central Midtown.

Consider extending your time in Atlanta before or after the National Conference and take advantage of all the area has to offer.  Guests who are interested in seeing several attractions over the course of a few day may wish to purchase a City Pass, with 10% off for AHS Conference attendees.  (More information here.)  A free Savings in the City Card is also available with a variety of discounts, including some of the attractions above, both courtesy of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A Curious Letter
Imagine the surprise when the AHS Executive Director received an email from renowned jazz drummer, Tony Moreno. Why would a jazz drummer contact the American Harp Society?  The letter began, "My mother passed away in 1989. She spoke very highly of you, so I wanted to get in touch with you immediately regarding her music."

Further reading of the letter indicated that Mr. Moreno's mother was accomplished harpist and Premier Prix de Harpe/Prix Lili Boulanger recipient, Nina Dunkel.  Ms. Dunkel studied at Juilliard and the Fontainebleau Conservatory of Music with Marcel Grandjany, Nadia and Lilli Boulanger and Pierre Jamet.  A 1946 New York Times reviewer noted that during her first public recital in Carnegie Chamber Music Hall at age 19, "she proved mistress of a wide dynamic range and she was not afraid to play loudly and

with pronounced rhythms when the music demanded them."  Besides performing solo harp pieces and chamber music, she was an accomplished pianist, musicologist, and educator. She recorded various albums of folk music (Monitor) from The Netherlands, France, Spain and Japan. After a number of years touring, she decided to work in NYC.  Nina also served AHS as advertising manager for The American Harp Journal from the 1960's until 1980.  She was Tony's inspiration to become a musician, and he was looking for ways to honor her legacy and share her collection with other harpists.

Tony has chosen to donate his mother's collection of music, including many original and signed scores, concert programs, correspondence and other harp memorabilia to the AHS Archives at Brigham Young University.  Just a sampling of the items include:

Personal correspondence to Nina Dunkel from Nadia Boulanger, Carols Salzedo, Marcel and Georgette Grandjany, Issac Stern, and Pierre Jamet.

1955 Christmas greetings from Nadia Boulanger

Original editions including:
Paul Creston's Lydian Song for Harp (signed)
Caplet's Divertissments pour la Harpe, signed by Nadia Boulnanger
Patrouille petit Marche Caracteristique by Alphonse Hasselmans (late 19th
Century/no date)
Impromtu pour la Harpe by J. Guy-Ropartz, signed to Nina by Nadia Boulanger
Variations pastorals sur un vieux Noel pour la Harpe by Marcel Samuel-Rousseau, signed by Betty Paret, Nina's first teacher
Theme et Variations pour la Harpe by Marcel Tournier (1916), Scherzo Romantique (1932)
Piece de Concert pour Harpe by Henri Busser (late 19th Century)
Contemplation pour Harpe by H. Renie (late 19th Century)
Jazz-Band pour la Harpe by Marcel Tournier, signed by Beatrice Burford (1916)
Alfredo Casella Sonata pour Arpa (first edition)
Children at Play, signed by Marcel Grandjany (1929)

The Archives of the American Harp Society, Inc., along with the archives of the World Harp Congress and personal collections from many additional harpists, are housed in the International Harp Archives located in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University.  The archives consist of items ranging from over 10,000 harp scores, manuscripts and recordings, to photographs, correspondence, programs and other documents.  Thanks to the persistent efforts and contributions of many individuals and organizations, the International Harp Archives are now perhaps the largest collection of harp materials in the world. This extraordinary collection from Nina Dunkel will enhance the AHS Archives.

A Robust Resource
AHS members may borrow archive-quality recordings (both audio and audio-visual) of workshops and recitals from past American Harp Society Conferences and Summer Institutes, as well as conversations with notables in the harp world recorded as part of the AHS Interview Series.  Visit the AHS Lending Library website for specific help about requests for borrowing or viewing the recordings on site. The IHA is also currently involved in a project to scan all of its pre-1923 published scores and make them accessible through the Internet Archive. To access these scans go the http://www.archive.org/ and in the search box enter the tag (byuinternationalharparchive) including the parentheses. The results of this search provide links to view or download the scores that have been scanned. These scans are available free of charge.

Become a Part of the Harp Legacy
The Archives of the AHS are a living and breathing resource that require on-going stimulus. Do you, a family member or colleague have content that could contribute to the richness of our Archives? What a wonderful personal legacy to have some of your harp collection available for harp lovers throughout the world. To explore a possible contribution of your harp library and memorabilia, contact the Archives curator
David Day with a description of your collection.

Nothing in particular in the music room to donate?  Another way to strengthen the Archives is through a financial contribution.  For example, AHS has purchased a few Parish Alvars manuscripts from the much larger Clive Morley Collection of Harp Music in England.  It is thought to be the largest collection of its kind in the world, with pieces dating from the eighteenth century to the present day, and there are a substantial number of works by all the major composers for the instrument. These include N.C. Bochsa, J. Balsir Chatterton, Franois Dizi, Sophia and J.L. Dussek, Jean-Baptiste Krumpholtz, Thodore Labarre, Franois Naderman, Parish Alvars, John Thomas, and Tommy Wright. AHS would like to acquire the entire Collection to make it available forever to harpists, requiring a sizeable investment.  You may contribute any amount online or by mail to AHS.  Feel free to contact Executive Director Kathryn McManus with any questions.

Thank you for voting!
A record turnout of over 350 ballots were received in the recent AHS Board of Directors election, with the majority cast online.  Final results will be announced shortly, and new Board members seated at the June Board meetings in Atlanta.
