West Coast Harp Society (Vancouver) Chapter

The West Coast Harp Society (Vancouver) Chapter is thinking of starting up their own interactive website in order to share information with the members.

A planned workshop and concert with Alfredo Ortiz in late August had to be cancelled.

Elizabeth Volp� Bligh will be performing the Ibert Trio for violin, cello and harp, and Jocelyn Morlock's Nightsong for bassoon and harp on October 29, 31 and Nov 1, 2015 at Pyatt Hall. Elizabeth will be coaching the harp students again next summer at the VSO Institute at Whistler. http://www.vsoinstitute.ca/

Vancouver Art Gallery "Out For Lunch" recital.

Lani Krantz has joined the faculty of the VSO School of Music, along with Elizabeth Volp� Bligh. The Vancouver Symphony School of Music offered its first 'Harp 101' workshop on August 17th led by Vancouver harpist Lani Krantz. Attendees are given an opportunity to play on the harp to learn basics of posture and hand placement, a mini-concert of some different genres possible on the harp, information on harp purchase, rentals and care and a FAQ session.

Over the last several months, Heidi Krutzen has had the opportunity to perform as guest principal harp of the Philharmonia in London, UK. Two of many highlights have included performing in Berlin at the Berlin Philharmonie and being driven to the airport by Dvor�k's great-great-grandson after a performance at the Dvor�k/Prague International Music Festival!  Heidi was also thrilled to return as guest principal harp to perform with her friends in the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Other recent highlights have included being named "runner-up" at the Metropolitan Opera principal harp auditions in May, speaking at PechaKucha Vol. 36 about music and her charity, Malambo Grassroots, and teaching and performing again at this years NYO Canada. Heidi's duo, COULOIR, with cellist Ariel Barnes are immensely grateful to the Canada Council for a production grant to release their second CD. "COULOIR/MAXWELL/MUHLY" will be released in December on Ravello Records with international distribution on NAXOS.

Joy Yeh was appointed to be the harp faculty of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University. In addition, she was invited to teach masterclass and private lessons at the Prince George Conservatory of Music in March.

The annual Harp Day is set for February 27 at University of Oregon this year. Katherine Siochi, AHS concert artist will be the guest presenter, offering a masterclass and concert.  We will have our annual AHS business meeting at that time.

Also, our own Julia Kay Jamieson is interested in coming to do a concert / workshop week-end sometime in April or May.

Jeff Parsons is performing the Debussy Dances on October 24.

Donation of a lovely Lyon and Healy style 11 to Oregon State University by Duane. This
harp belonged to the late Mary Bond, and was previously owned by Maureen Love, who
is the harpist for Pink Martini.

Classified: Harp for Sale. Laura Zaerr is selling a bronzed Lyon and Healy 22, good

Spring Harp Festival 2015
Saturday, May 7, 2016 we will be holding our annual Spring Harp Festival at Brigham Young University. We usually have over 200 harpists who play and represent over 30 teachers.

Congratulations to Mischael Ann Staples who won the Salute to Youth and Soloed with The Utah Symphony on September 22, 2015.

Utah State University Freshman Jessica Gunnerson will perform Alberto Ginastera's
Variaciones concertantes with the USU Symphony Orchestra during the fall semester.

The American Harp Society, Inc. Summer Institute was held in Logan, Utah at Utah State University on June 21-24, 2015. It was a great event with many harpists attending from Utah and
from all over the United States several of our local harp chapter members participated in
the competition and presented workshops.

Utah State University Harp 
The Utah State University Harp Studio is excited to welcome performance psychologist Dr. Noa Kageyama to campus on October 14th and 15th to work with students in individual sessions as well as a masterclass setting. The class on Thursday the 15th from 5:30-7 in room 214 of the Chase Fine Arts Building is free and open to all harpists in the community. Dr. Kageyama will present information on how to experience better poise under pressure and maximizing our potential as musicians, as well as working with individual students to demonstrate these concepts.

Greater Seattle Chapter
Washington

The Greater Seattle Chapter is hosting a Harp Fest on October 17, 2015. The day will include two sessions of jazz/improv plus panels on playing in the orchestra and playing for weddings, all led by experts from our harp community. The day will end with a concert featuring this year's scholarship winners, Angie Kong and Prydwyn Goldman, as well as local professionals. Free to all chapter members.

The annual AHS program Auditions and Evaluations will take place with two sessions, February 6 and March 6.  Alison Austin will be the adjudicator.

After years of dreaming and planning, Alison Austin will open a new studio and harp salon in Edmonds. On October 24, there will be a public open house and celebration at Austin Harp Arts and Austin Harp Salon, with door prizes and a drawing for a Shamrock lever harp. AHA will carry music, strings and other needs. Ogden and the Chicago Concertino harps will be available for sale. 110 West Dayton St., Suite 104, Edmonds, WA.

Sophie Baird-Daniel won the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle 2015 Frances Walton Competition. This led to a series of recitals and educational outreach programs in underserved areas of Eastern Washington.

Valerie Muzzolini Gordon will perform the Debussy Danses with the Seattle Symphony this December 3, 5, & 6th. She will also play a lesser known Parish-Alvars Concerto, Opus 81 in G minor, with the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra in Gig Harbor and Tacoma on February 27 & 28th, 2016.

Catherine Case has been appointed to the faculties of University of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran University, following the retirement of Pat Wooster in May.

Wyoming Members

Jane Hamman from Casper will be playing on Casper College's Red Stone Recital Series Friday, September 18. She will play a portion of Persichetti's Serenade No. 10 for Flute and Harp and Joseph Lauber's Sonatine for Bassoon and Harp.

On October 11, Jane will present a concert of harp chamber works, including an organ/harp transcription of Mahler's Adagietto from Symphony No. 5, Grandjany's Aria in the Classical Style, Persichetti's Serenade No. 10 for flute and harp, Joseph Lauber's Sonatine for bassoon and harp, Bach/ Gounod's Ave Maria for two harps, and Irish Songs arranged by Marson for voice and harp.

In December, she will be a featured performer with the Casper Children's Chorale and Bel Canto under the direction of Marcia Patton.

In September Alice Freeman judged all the Folk Music Competitions at the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Highland Festival in Estes Park for the 5th year. We had very high caliber contestants this year, including three professional harp players. In October Alice will be facilitating a Breakout Meeting of Graduates at the "One Day Immersion in Therapeutic Music" pre-conference session for the Northern Lights Harp Festival in Cornwall, Ontario Canada.

Last May after nearly 50 years with the Wyoming Symphony, Connie Wallace retired her position as principal harp and section viola. She continues to play weddings and other public functions with her violinist husband, Jack. Congratulations, Connie!
