More to come! This will be a
Emory Conference Center
conference not to be missed,on the lush wooded campus of Emory University, only minutes from downtown Atlanta. In the middle of an urban resurgence, Atlanta was named one of The New York Times' 52 places to visit in 2014.  Around every corner is a new attraction, restaurant or shopping opportunity. If you haven't visited in a few years, you haven't really seen Atlanta.  Atlanta is also America's most accessible city with direct, non-stop service to more than 150 US destinations - 80 percent of those within a two-hour flight. Plan to come early and stay after to enjoy this exciting city and region.
Ready, Set, Compete!
The American Harp Society, Inc. partners with its supporting organization, the American Harp Society Foundation, in offering a variety of competition, award and scholarship opportunities to AHS members. Our websites have recently been updated to reflect the 2016 deadlines and requirements.

In a change from tradition, the AHS Foundation Board has scheduled the Anne Adams Awards and the Grandjany Memorial Competition well ahead of the National Conference, on June 3-4, 2016 at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. The application deadline for both is March 1, 2016, with detailed instructions and repertoire available online.

As in 2015, the AHS Foundation is providing two $500 Kids for Camp awards to make 2016 summer music camp a reality for young harpists who might otherwise not have such an opportunity.  The awards are based on financial need and musical promise, and applications are due by April 15, 2016.

Know a student planning to study in Colorado next year? New for 2016 is the Kathy Bundock Moore Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Moore was both a harp
instructor for the University of Northern Colorado and a private harp teacher in the state of Colorado for over 30 years.  She worked diligently to increase the

effectiveness of the harp instruction in Colorado as well as through AHS. It was her wish to fund a scholarship for students attending Colorado colleges and universities enrolled in an undergraduate music degree program with a specialization in harp. Currently the funds will provide for a non-renewable $2,000 scholarship to be awarded annually. Applications are due by April 15, 2016, with announcement of the scholarship recipient planned for
June 5, 2016.

Visit www.harpsociety.org/CompetitionsAwards for more information and links to the Foundation website.
Share Your Nominations
One factor that keeps organizations fresh and moving forward is having involved members with a variety of viewpoints, skills and ideas. Would you like to serve on a committee, or know someone who would make a terrific Board member or should be honored for long service to AHS?

From November 1st to December 1st, online nominations are invited for the 2016-2017 Board of Directors, numerous committees, and the Lifetime Achievement Award. Please visit www.harpsociety.org/About/Nominations.asp during November and share your ideas. The form will ask for a short biography of your nominee if available, your reasons for nominating them and any special qualities and skills they have that would support their nomination. We want to hear from you!

Be Part of Something Big on December 1st
October is flying by, and #GivingTuesday on December 1st will be here before we know it. In case you missed the last newsletter,
the goal of #GivingTuesday is to create a global day of giving back, which celebrates generosity and kindness. The day itself falls on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving each year. AHS is participating, both in asking members to support our mission as well as to contribute in your own way to your community.

How can you help, individually or as a chapter? It may be helpful to think about the new AHS mission statement.   Celebrate our legacy with a gift in honor or memory of a favorite teacher or performer. Inspire excellence by hosting an AHS Concert Artist or National Competition Winner performance locally. You can help empower the next generation by underwriting a 2016 National Conference registration for a deserving young student, or contribute to a scholarship fund of your choice.

Watch for more information as #GivingTuesday gets closer, and thank you for joining AHS in making a difference to the harp world and in our wider communities.

Hauntings from the Archives . . .

As we celebrate our legacy, there is much to find in the International Harp Archives. In the Halloween spirit, we've learned that when you enter the Archives harp room at night, and the lights are off, it always looks like there's a man just standing in the corner watching you!  In fact, it's really just this bust of a famous harpist/teacher/composer - who is it?

There's also a chair in the Archives that people say is haunted. We understand that is the favorite chair of our archivist David Day for staff meetings!
Found on the Web . . .
Have you ever been curious about what goes on in AHS Board meetings? What can they talk about for so many hours?! And what important actions were taken by the Board in Logan? Now you can "read all about it" online at www.harpsociety.org. Log in* and then click "member links" at the top of the page. Select the "Board Minutes" folder, and scroll to the bottom to find all the latest files.

Another very handy file found in the same "member links" area is the AHS Administrative Listing, updated from last winter's print Directory. "AHS Administrative Listing (Updated October 2015)" is the second file in the "AHS" Folder. Any time you have a question, need to find out about a program or activity of AHS, or just see how we're structured, you'll find what you need here. And of course, you can look up contact information for anyone in AHS who has allowed it to be published in the Membership Directory, in print or online. Check your own listing and be sure all of your information is up to date too!
