The Mission of
the American Harp
Society, Inc.
|
A mission statement is a one-sentence statement describing the reason an organization or program exists and is used to help guide decisions about priorities, actions, and responsibilities. Good mission statements should be clear, memorable and concise.
The mission statement of the American Harp Society, Inc. has been appearing in slightly different versions online and in print, prompting a review to resolve it into a single consistent statement. That process led to lively and creative Board discussions of the entire statement and the sense that the language could be more comprehensive and inclusive for the future. As a result, the following new mission statement was adopted by the Board of Directors during its June meetings in Logan, Utah:
The mission of the American Harp Society, Inc. is to celebrate our legacy, inspire excellence, and empower the next generation of harpists.
Examples of this mission abound in AHS's programs. We celebrate our legacy through maintaining the rich International Harp Archives; publication projects such as the recent Space Odyssey edition of a work by Aristid von Wrtzler; the release of recordings of Marcel Grandjany and Carlos Salzedo; performances and tributes during Conferences and Summer Institutes; and the Lifetime Achievement awards. Excellence is inspired through national events, chapter programs, Music Education Auditions and Evaluations, and of course various competitions and awards. Those efforts also empower our next generation of harpists and harp enthusiasts, along with scholarships, programming at the Summer Institutes and Conferences, and access to the mentoring of teachers and colleagues through various AHS activities and resources. Applicants for the dynamic Grants Program, just renewed by the Board for 2015-2016, will find a wide variety of projects fit well with this new mission statement.

Have you ever vi sited or logged in online to the International Harp Archives at the Harold B. Lee Library and Brigham Young University? It is a wonderland of interesting resources and information, either for serious research or just browsing for fun. Take a look . . .
The Archives house some highly unusual artifacts, like this 6" harp statue, probably from the Dale Barco Papers collection. Archives staff are uncertain of its purpose, but speculate it may be a blood vial due to its hollow glass column. Can you contribute to its identification or history? The Archives also houses both circulating and special collections, including:
Over 8,000 circulating scores: Markings from John Marson, Jack Nebergall, Sylvia Meyers, the Pratts, Dale Barco, Stella Castellucci, Alfred Kastner, Eleanor Fell, Grace Follet, Lucile Jennings, Dorothy Remsen, Bob D. Litterell, etc. 2,500 rare editions which represent:
Pre-1900's
Less than 5 copies known in libraries world-wide
Over 1,000 manuscripts including from:
Henriette Reni, Marcel Tournier, Germaine Taileferre, Carl Oberthr, Elias Parish Alvars, John Thomas, etc.
|
P.1 of "Romance" by Elias Parish Alvars
|
An example is this Romance by Parish Alvars, of whom Hector Berlioz wrote, " This man is a magician. In his hands the harp becomes a siren, with lovely neck inclined and wild hair flowing, stirred by his passionate embrace to utter the music of another world."
Download the brochure above, learn more about its resources and explore the International Harp Archives at http://sites.lib.byu.edu/harp/. Please share your favorite discovery and perhaps it will be highlighted in an upcoming newsletter!
