Learning

Opportunities abound, from open coaching sessions with Courtney Hershey Bress and Alexandra Katelyn Mullins, to a variety of workshops with topics that include effective practice techniques, exceptional fingering, repertoire, improvisation, transcribing and arranging. Two special sessions explore the resources available to AHS members on www.harpsociety.org and in the AHS International Harp Archives at the Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University.

Fellowship

Just as important as all the music at AHS events is the opportunity to enjoy social time with other harpists. Institute attendees will enjoy a reception hosted by Lyon & Healy Harps on Sunday, and another by Utah State University First Lady Joyce Albrecht on Wednesday. Meet other members from your region, including your AHS Regional Director, at lunchtime on Monday, and of course enjoy the post-concert ice cream socials two evenings. This frozen delight is apparently a local specialty not to be missed!

Premiering a New Edition:

Aristid von Wrtzler's Space Odyssey

Looking for four-harp music? A multi-year effort of the AHS Harp Literature Committee will be debuted by the Los Angeles Harp Ensemble on their Monday concert during the Summer Institute in Logan.

The Space Odyssey, American Harp Society, Inc. Edition, was proposed by David Day, curator for the AHS International Harp Archives at the Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University. This edition has been compiled using five original sources from the Archives: two manuscript scores; two out of the four manuscript parts; and an LP recording performed by the New York Harp Ensemble under von Wrtzler's direction.  Special thanks to Harp Literature Chair Sonja Inglefield, chief editor, and her co-editors Mark Zabriskie and Camille Anderson, for bringing this edition to publication.

Mr. von Wrtzler characterized the special effects included in the work "as wheels in a journey through the eras of the cosmos - a psychedelic sound picture within a framework of musical language." Read more of his original program notes and the story of putting together this edition in the Preface to Space Odyssey.

The complete sets of parts will be available for purchase during the Summer Institute at a special discounted price of $25, $10 off the regular price of $35.

Summer means Summer Camp

In addition to AHS's Summer Institute, there are many opportunities over the next few weeks for summer study and music making. If you're looking for just the right fit for yourself or a student, be sure to check the Upcoming Events Calendar on the AHS website. It's also a great place to discover local harp concerts and events that might coincide with your vacation travel plans.

Special summer plans are in store for two young harpists who were recently awarded "Kids for Camp" scholarships from the American Harp Society Foundation, founded by Felice Pomeranz.  Eleisha Noelle Keen will be enjoying the Arizona Harp Experience, and Clarissa Rose Schillin will attend the Interlochen National Music Camp. Congratulations on your scholarships, ladies, and all the best from the American Harp Society, Inc.!
