April 2015
Welcome to the April American Harp Society, Inc. (AHS) e-Newsletter. This month we celebrate how member volunteers make a difference to AHS and to their communities, as evidenced in chapter activities and in our upcoming national events.
Thank you AHS Volunteers!
Preparing for an event like the 2015 Summer Institute puts the spotlight on the amazing efforts of our host committee and chapter, board members and others volunteering to make it a reality. Many of our members also volunteer at the chapter level year round performing, sharing their knowledge with chapter members, and managing chapter business. We hear many stories about how members are extending appreciation of the harp in their communities by volunteering to bring a little musical joy to seniors, hospitals, and youth or church groups. And let's not forget our board of directors who spend countless hours behind the scene in meetings, researching and strategizing on key matters, and planning for our organization's future.
April 12-18 is National Volunteer Week. AHS salutes you, our member volunteers, for all you do for AHS, your chapter and elsewhere in your community. We are proud of you!

Will Yours Be The "AHS Chapter of the Year"?
AHS Chapters are where our mission comes to life all year long. Chapter activities foster an appreciation for our instrument and its music, inspire and inform musical growth, lead to new compositions, and provide practical experiences for students and professionals.
If your chapter has had a busy and successful year, please consider applying to be recognized as the AHS Chapter of the Year, which includes a $300 cash award for the chapter. The application is available here, with guidelines found on www.harpsociety.org/chapters.
Start today, as the deadline for submissions is May 15th.
The Chapter of the Year is selected by the AHS Executive Committee and will be announced at the Annual Membership Meeting on June 21, 2015, at the 2015 Summer Institute in Logan, Utah.

Perform or Compete at the Summer Institute
Don't just sit and listen in Logan, get behind a harp and play! One new opportunity this year at the Summer Institute is the Orchestra Project, with personal mentoring by Lynne Aspnes, Professor Emeritus from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance; Elizabeth Hainen, Principal Harp for the Philadelphia Orchestra; and Julie Smith Phillips, Principal Harp of the San Diego Symphony. Young performers will gain rare and valuable experience through coaching, rehearsals and performance with a full orchestra of some challenging orchestral repertoire. Don't miss this chance, the online application is due by April 25th. There will also be a variety of workshops for all.
