Art enthusiasts, tea lovers and the community are invited to a free art walk and tea party at Willamette Medical Center Friday, April 11, from 4-6 p.m. for a showing of seven local artists who provide an array of artistic talent in our community. Featured artist Kenneth Haley's photos of hummingbirds, dragonflies and dewy petals are on display in the Community Room. Pictured is "Visions of Emerald," a male Anna's hummingbird taking a sip of a raindrop from the tip of a fern leaf. The photo was taken in north Eugene in January. Fiber artists Barbara Bochnovic, Anne Daughtry, Marian Sparks, Carolyn Frederickson, Phyllis Prom and Mary Jane Moffat will also be on hand to discuss their detailed works. Fiber art tours throughout the building will be led by Sparks at 4:30 p.m., Moffat at 5 p.m. and Bochnovic at 5:30 p.m. Find out how they create their amazing pieces. Enjoy the art and sip a cup of passion fruit, jasmine, vanilla cream or other flavored teas from some of the world's finest tea gardens. Tea provided by Angela McDonald of Labrang Tea Traders in Eugene. See you at the show.

Healthy eating on low income achievable

The food we eat plays an important role in our health. Inflammation in the body caused by some foods can increase chronic pain or lead to flare ups. Eating healthy can be especially difficult if you are low income and require a special diet, such as vegan, diabetic, gluten free or any other. Food for Lane County and the Springfield farmers' market, called Marketplace at Sprout, can help. Call Food for Lane County at 541-343-2822 and they can match you to the nearest pantry to where you live. To view the list of the many Lane County locations, go to www.foodforlanecounty.org/en.   Click on "Programs and Services," click on "Emergency Food Pantry System," scroll down through the list. Some pantries provide specialty food boxes with extra vegetables or gluten free foods, while other sites have a shopping-style pantry where you can pick what you want. Marketplace at Sprout, open Fridays from 3-7 p.m. year-round, has a special program for Oregon Trail card users. For every $2 a SNAP customer spends on their card, they get an extra $1 to spend, with a cap of $5. See more at:

New website focuses
on persistent pain and the brain

Do you want to relieve the pain, change the brain, and transform the person? Learn more about the brain's ability to control persistent pain through this new website at http://neuroplastix.com/. This innovative site combines website and workbook, both as a teaching tool and learning tool, for clinicians and patients. Neuroplastix has been working with people living with persistent pain to come up with programs focused on community. The program is called Neuroplastic Transformation and a seminar was recently held in Eugene in which Pain Management Partners practitioners attended. Education is the foundation of neuroplastic treatment of persistent pain. Review the website and see if this may help you on your journey of discovery.
Smart Gardening: Prepare yourself first, then tend to those beds

If you're like the staff at Pain Management Partners, you've probably cleaned up the yard, prepped the garden beds and planted flowers already during some of our recent sunny days. You may have also paid for it with a stiff lower back and sore legs from bending and kneeling. Let's pace ourselves with these tips for an enjoyable gardening season.
  • Make a game plan and set reasonable goals. Break your work up into sections over a few days.
  • Take breaks and drink a lot of water. Hydration is key.
  • Do some light stretching.
  • There are some great gardening tools that can help with better grips and longer handles.
  • Garden easier with raised beds or potted plants.
  • Cushion your knees.
  • Listen to your body. When you're tired, rest.
  • Enjoy your excellent work!
