Spring Is Just Around The Corner
Cale Kliethermes

I'm getting excited about warmer weather. Even though spring is not "officially" here for a few weeks; it's time to get to work on our homes after the long winter months.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid problems:

1. Check your air conditioner to make sure it is working properly.  If you wait to check until the first hot day you may be sorry.

2. Change your HVAC filter monthly.

3. Clean your clothes dryer vent to make sure it is clear of lint.

4. Replace any damaged, loose, or missing shingles.

5. Clean debris from your gutters and downspouts so that water drains the way it is supposed to.

6. Trim back any tree branches or shrubs that may be touching your home.

7. Inspect and replace, if necessary, caulk on windows, doors, and other penetrations such as: dryer vent, cable and phone line, and gas line.

8. Inspect all exterior surfaces. Touch up all areas that need paint or staining to keep materials from deteriorating.

9. Inspect the grading around your home; water should drain away from your foundation on all sides.

10. Make sure all sprinkler heads are pointed away from the side of your home and are not spraying the outside walls.

11. Join us next month at the Mid-Missouri Home and Lifestyle Expo where we can visit and discuss your specific home improvement questions.

Hopefully, that will get your spring preparations started. So you can sit back, relax, and enjoy a worry free season.

Don't forget to move the clocks forward this weekend.

Color Forecast 2014

"The state of color is constantly changing and gathers influence from the world around us," says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. Each year Jordan, along with her color experts, surveys these swirling global currents and selects key colors that capture a picture of the latest color trends. For the Sherwin-Williams Colormix 2014 forecast, Jordan has chosen 38 colors that are grouped into the four palettes she describes below. Feel free to use these colors as design inspiration when planning your next home remodeling project.

CURIOSITY It has been said that what one may see as strange and unique, another may see as beautiful - this is the wonder of the Curiosity palette, which is largely driven by science and geology. Nature at the most molecular level is becoming a resource for patterns, textures and colors. Mined minerals, metals and raw gems also fuel the color story.

DIAPHANOUS The delicate nature of this palette embodies the very essence of balance, simplicity and elegance. The colors of Diaphanous are light, delicate and translucent. Society's need for overconsumption has given way to minimalism and a quiet reality. This palette evokes tranquility, sensuality, serenity and escape.

INTRINSIC A little bohemian and plenty of color make up the Intrinsic palette. Its focus is around embracing and preserving tradition, culture and design, while bringing in new influences. World events in 2014, such as the Winter Olympic Games in Russia, are driving a new appreciation of folkloric costumes, patterns and styles of the country.

REASONED Founded in black, white and gray, this palette celebrates the quantifiable world's impact on design, illustrated by the use of geometry and 3D printing to create patterns and shapes in all categories of design. The hues of Reasoned represent shadows, negative space and tone-on-tone layering.
