Unique dog park on its way to the riverfront
|
Dog lovers across the Kansas City area will soon have a unique hangout where their four-legged friends are welcomed guests. Port KC is partnering with local Kansas City developer Bear Bishop LLC to build a dog park, bar and coffeehouse called "Bar K" at Berkley Riverfront.
Bar K will feature a two-acre dog park with large and small dog play areas, as well as a bar, restaurant and coffeehouse. In keeping with the riverfront location, the bar and coffeehouse will be built in a modern/industrial style using repurposed shipping containers. The dog park will have all-weather seating areas, and it will be staffed at all times with trained Bar K employees so customers won't have to worry about their pets if they want to step inside for a drink or a healthy bite to eat.
Bar K hosted a "Pup-Up" party on July 10 on the proposed location to kick off its crowdfunding campaign. It was very successful with about 500 people and 300 dogs in attendance.

Berkley Courts grand opening
|
With the Missouri River to the north and the Kansas City skyline to the south, around 200 people enjoyed beautiful views while playing volleyball at the grand opening of Berkley Courts on Sunday, July 31st. There are six brand new sand volleyball courts on the eastern edge of Berkley Riverfront Park, with future plans to include kickball fields and space for leisure sports. The area also includes LED lights to allow for evening play and plenty of room for parking.
Port KC built the courts in partnership with KC Crew, a thriving local recreational sports league operator. The goal for both organizations is to meet the growing demand for more places to play near downtown. KC Crew's fall volleyball leagues will make frequent use of the courts. There is the potential for 48 teams playing per night, which significantly increases KC Crew's opportunity for play from the previous 8 to 14 teams per night.

A busy year on the Missouri River
It has been a busy year for commercial river traffic on the Missouri River, with this year's volume already surpassing last year's totals. At its peak this spring, The Port of Kansas City- Woodswether Terminal loaded approximately 15 to 20 trucks of fertilizer per day. So far this year, there have been over 20 barges accounting for over 30,000 tons of fertilizer moving into the Kansas City region.
Local shippers are also taking advantage of competitive freight rates generated by the terminal. Recently, the Kansas City area loaded ten barges for destinations along the Mississippi River. Central Plains Cement/Eagle Materials shipped 9,000 tons of Portland cement clinker from their terminal in Blue Springs, and Arthur Daniels Midland (ADM) shipped 12,000 tons of grain from their KCK terminal. ADM is predicting increased volumes for fertilizer for the Port of Kansas City over the next several months.
