St. Michael's Academy
  :

It's beginning to feel a lot like summer out there.  But unfortunately, there is still work to be done.  The eighth grade students will be completing their finals next week before preparing for their graduation ceremony in the evening on June 9th.  And our other classes are using every last minute to complete their workload.  So, no falling apart yet!

We finished up our grandparent events this week with our fourth grade chorus performance and our sixth grade play.  Again, very talented students!  During these events, we've enjoyed getting to know the grandparents of our students.  I think we've figured out where some of their talent comes from...

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend.  Remember to take time with your children to honor those you have died in wars.  Celebrate and honor their heroism by attending a parade or special ceremony.

See you Tuesday!

Peace,

Ann Dougal
Principal

From The Classroom of Ms. Enderlin - PreK-4C

The students of PreK4C have been very busy reading Fairytales!  They started by retelling the stories of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs using felt board stories.

Then, we read two other versions of each story. These new stories were Goatilocks and the Three Bears by Eric S. Perl, and Goldi Rocks and the Three Bears by Corey Rosen Schwartz and Beth Coulton, The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf by Mark Teague, and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka.

After reading each new story, we discussed what was the same and what was different about that book and its original story.

Finally, the students worked together in small groups to create a poster for each story describing who was in it, where it took place, and what happened. The children really enjoyed getting to listen to funny new versions of stories they already knew and loved!

Grade 4 Grandparent Event

Grade 4 Gets Standing Ovation

Wow! That was the word that was heard over and over again from everyone in attendance at the Grade 4 Chorus recital on Thursday!

Under the invigorating direction of Ms. Vanessa Ford from The Springfield Community Music School, the 4th grade students put on quite a choral performance. Highlights included Come and Let Us Sing, Hi My Name is Joe, Our God is an awesome God, a Patriotic Melody, I Believe I Can Fly and a very special tribute to grandparents and parents with Wind Beneath My Wings.

The student's energy and enthusiasm filled Holy Cross Church. Afterwards, grandparents and students had a chance to spend some time together at a reception back at the school.

GREAT JOB EVERYONE!

Gr. 6 Ready For Broadway!

6th Grade Puts On Quite A Show!

Grandparents, parents and friends of Grade 6 were treated to a fantastic production of "The Hysterical History of the Trojan War" by the grade 6 students this morning.

You are probably familiar with the cast of characters like Apollo, Zeus, Achilles, Odysseus, Poseidon, the Trojans and the Spartans but the 6th grade made them come alive on our own St. Michael's stage!

8th Grade Class Trip

High Meadows Here We Come!

The 8th grade made their way south on Thursday for the annual 8th Grade Class Trip to High Meadows in Granby, CT.  The weather was perfect and a good time was had by all!

Check the website next week for a photo gallery of the entire trip!

Grades 6 and 7 Field Trip

Nothing Like A Tea Party!

Unless you are the British and you own the tea! We are speaking, of course, of the famous Boston Tea Party. Our 6th and 7th graders traveled to Boston this week to learn about that historical moment in time that brought the colonists one step closer to a revolutionary war.

They even had an opportunity to re-enact the Tea Party!

Kindergarten Visits Lupa Zoo

Our Kindergarten classes visited the Lupa Zoo in Ludlow this week.

Kindergarten Welcomes Addition To Classroom

Peep, Peep, Peep!

Mrs. Ruell's Kindergarten class was a very busy place on Thursday, May 19th. After observing eggs in an incubator for 23 days, 18 beautiful chicks were hatched! Each one, just like children, a little different from the other. Each chick has a name, like Fluffy, Sunshine, Blackie, Rosie, and Paris. The class learned so much about the life cycle of chickens, what they need, and how quickly they grow. They also spent time observing the chicks and drawing their observations.

Our little miracles with return to the farm soon to join the other chicks. A big thank you to "Farmer Jimmy" for helping us with this wonderful springtime project!

5th Grade Field Trip to Old Sturbridge Village

Our 5th graders had the opportunity to step back in time this week at Old Sturbridge Village. Photos from the field trip will be featured in next week's Messenger. Stay tuned!

Grade 4 Visits Storrowton Village

And speaking of stepping back in time, our 4th graders visited Storrowton Village today and had the opportunity to see how children entertained themselves, made candles, visited a one room school house and wrote with ink using quill pens!

Our prayers continue to be with Mr. Rancitelli, who is undergoing treatment for a cancer recurrence. Each week, a different homeroom sends him cards. If your family would like to send a card, please send it to school with your child, clearly marked for Mr. Rancitelli. His family has set up a blog to write about this experience.Click here to read the blog.
