St. Michael's Academy

  :

Today we celebrated the last day of school. It's always hard to believe that another year has gone by as we experience the bitter-sweet feeling of saying good-bye to friends and welcoming summer.

We began the day by celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving  and then awarding certificates of achievement to students in grades K-7.  It was great to see so many proud parents and grandparents looking on.

We are faced with many choices in life but one of the most important choices is how to raise our children. Your choice to send your child to St. Michael's Academy is investing in their future. Thank you for making that choice.

May God bless you this summer!

Peace,

 Ann E.Dougal

Good News!

Have you heard the good news? Springfield Public Schools is pleased to announce that St. Michael's Academy has been added to the SPS Community Eligibility Provision application. This means that all students, under the age of 18, will receive lunch daily at no charge for the 2015-2016 school year!

From The Advancement and Admissions Offices

Advancement

Thank you TD Charitable Foundation!

We would like to thank TD Charitable Foundation for their generous grant to support funding for our 2nd Grade Violin Program for the 2015-16 academic year.  TD Bank, through the TD Charitable Foundation, recently awarded St. Michael's Academy $2,500 to supplement our violin program which is incoporated in our second grade curriculum and provided in cooperation with the Community Music School of Springfield.

We are very grateful for this gift which allows students the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, work together in a positive, social, and artistic community, along with building self-confidence.

Thank you for your support of the arts in education, and your partnership in providing the best possible education for our students here at St. Michael's Academy.

Admissions

It's the last day of school! We wish you a very safe and happy summer. I will be working on posting all the photos from throughout the school year in Drop Box and will send out a constant contact alert when they are available.

The Admissions Office remains open all summer and St. Michael's Academy continues to accept applications throughout July and August. Help us increase enrollment by networking with family and friends and spreading the word. Ask them to consider giving the gift of a Catholic education.    Remember....

Invest in a child's education AND their FUTURE....

Classroom Highlights

It's Summer Vacation!

Today we closed the school year with Mass and the Awards Ceremony.

Our thanks go to Fr. Ryan Rooney from Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish for celebrating our end of the year Mass with us.

At the conclusion of Mass, the certificates of achievement were awarded. As Ms. Dougal said, not every student gets an award but every student should be proud of his/her accomplishments this year. Awards were given in the areas of Art, Computer, Music, Physical Education, Spanish, Perfect Attendance, Outstanding Effort, Most Improved,Christian Service, and Academic Excellence.

The Best in Academic Excellence

From The Desk Of...Mrs. Dean - Grade 2

We've had a fun filled and faith filled year in grade 2. Our Catholic students received 2 sacraments this school year, Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. They were able to receive communion with the student body at our school Masses in May and June.

Our violin students wowed us at an all school concert to show us their achievement. We had a wonderful field trip to Symphony Hall to see the play "Miss Nelson is Missing." The trip was a huge success. We've read many non-fiction stories in our new reading series along with some folktales and realistic fiction stories.  All in all this has been an exciting year full of learning and fun.

Sharing Our Heritage

Our 5th Grade students continued their presentations about family heritage this week.

Grace presented on her family's Polish heritage and was joined by her grandparents. She shared Polish traditions and had samples of some Polish desserts.

Robert did a Powerpoint presentation on his Scottish heritage complete with examples of his family's tartan plaid and shortbread cookies. He was joined by his dad, Robert, Sr.

Danny and his mom presented on their French Canadian heritage. They spoke about traditions and showed photos of Quebec where Mrs. Sears' family is from.

And wrapping up the week, Lucas and his parents shared their Brazilian heritage. Both of Lucas' parents are from Brazil and treated the class to some Brazilian fudge that Mrs.Garcia made!

7th Grade Math Has Yummy Ending!

This week the seventh grade showed off their "sweet" math skills by working on probability problems using skittles.  Each class had to count the candy and answer various questions about the outcomes of certain events.  The best part came when the student got to finalize their lab by eating the data.

Perfect Attendance

This week we salute Marc from Grade 7 for his perfect attendance last week.  As we've said before..."Good attendance pays off!"

Kindergarten Closing Ceremony

Our Kindergarten classes held their closing ceremony this week and made every parent and grandparent in attendance as proud as possible. The boys and girls demonstrated what respectful, well mannered, nice children they were as they accepted their certificates from Ms. Dougal. After the ceremony they enjoyed a reception back at the school. Congratulations everyone!

Thank You Troop 11929

A big THANK YOU goes out to Girl Scout Troop 11929 for their recent donation to St. Michael's Academy. Under the leadership of Troop Leaders Tammy Yacavone and Becky Denault, the troop took their hard earned money and purchased two large water decanters on stands. These will be a huge addition to SMA events. Thank you ladies for a definite good deed!

From The Rancitelli Family Blog
Dear Friends,

So, here we are in June of 2015.

So much time has passed and so many things have changed. It's hard to believe that teachers and students from St. Michael's Academy began sending out cards in September of 2014 and have consistently sent something all through the school year ...  right up until now!  Mr. Rancitelli knows that attached to every card - and he has hundreds of them- is a prayer. It is very moving.

So, when he recently opened an envelope and read the front of this card,
it seemed more than a coincidence that one of the signers, Carmela, just so happened to be at our house at the time .

They posed together and the message on the front turned out to be most appropriate ...she truly is a little angel!

   THANK YOU ST. MICHAEL'S ACADEMY
         FOR YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT!

Field Days

Grades 1-5 had a blast at their Field Day this week! From water balloon toss to tug-of-war to very competitive kick-ball games, everyone enjoyed the day. And thank you God for gracing us with beautiful weather for the day!

Summer Safety Tips

Bring on summer vacation but let's make sure it is a safe one! Keep in mind these safety tips:

Water Safety:

Drownings are the leading cause of injury/death for young children ages 1 to 4, and three children die every day as a result of drowning.

  • Always supervise children when in or around water. A responsible adult should constantly watch young children.
  • Teach kids to swim. Formal swimming lessons can protect young children from drowning.
  • Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Your CPR skills could save someone's life.
Beat the Heat and Sun:

Heat-related illness happens when the body's temperature control system is overloaded. Infants and children up to 4 years of age are at greatest risk. Even young and healthy people can get sick from the heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather.

Just a few serious sunburns can increase you and your child's risk of

skin cancer later in life. Their skin needs protection from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they're outdoors.

  • Cover up. Clothing that covers your and your child's skin helps protect against UV rays.
  • Use sunscreen with at least SPF (sun protection factor) 30 and UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB (ultraviolet B) protection every time you and your child go outside and reapply often.
Prevent Injuries:

Each year in the United States, emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries.

Falls at home and on the playground are a common cause of injury.

  • Supervise young children at all times around fall hazards, such as stairs and playground equipment.
  • Use stair gates, which can help keep a busy, active child from taking a dangerous tumble.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. Concussions can occur in any sport or recreation activity.

  • Learn concussion signs and symptoms and what to do if a concussion occurs.
  • Make sure kids and teens wear the right protective equipment for their sport or recreation activity.
  • Always wear a helmet when biking or skateboarding.

Don't let bugs "bug" you:

Prayer Corner

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us!

We pray for all St. Michael's Academy students, families, faculty, and staff, and their special intentions.

This week we pray in a special way for:

Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dunn
Mr. and Mrs. James Hayes
Sr. Ruth Virginia Quinn
Ms Jeanette Dooney-King
Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Queenin
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Roy
Mr. and Mrs. Drew Piemonte

And we pray for recently deceased:

       William Cooper Clark II

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Our prayers continue to be with Mr. Rancitelli, who is undergoing treatment for a cancer recurrence. Each week, a different homeroom sends him cards. If your family would like to send a card, please send it to school with your child, clearly marked for Mr. Rancitelli. His family has set up a blog to write about this experience.
