St. Michael's Academy

Despite having yet another Monday snow day, it was quite a busy week at St. Michael's!

Our students were very creative in their projects to celebrate the 100th day of school on Thursday and Fr. Mark Glover from St. Catherine of Siena Parish celebrated Mass with us on Friday. Students also enjoyed their Valentine's celebrations and were reminded that the day is in honor of St. Valentine who was a third-century Roman saint associated with tradition of courtly love.

Enjoy your February vacation and please remember that Wednesday, February 18th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. I encourage you to discuss the Lenten season with your children and attend church services on Wednesday.

We will see everyone again on Monday, February 23rd. Stay warm!

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal, Principal

Classroom Highlights

From The Desk of .... Sra. Velez - Spanish

Sabia usted que...?

Did you know that the 2015 "Spanish Adventure"  has  just started at St. Michael's  Academy?  God is  awesome  and  that's why we start our  class reunions  with a prayer session with "The  sign of  the Cross" and  the "Gloria". We recognize that we can not start our Spanish lesson without asking for God's blessings over each one of us. If we are blessed with theopportunity to learn a second language, we want our Lord to be the centerand starting point in this Adventure.

Our elementary grade level students have been able to start using Spanish

vocabulary words in complete sentences. Dialogues have been part of our

lessons constantly which give students the opportunity to practice and

incorporate these new words into their own small group conversations.

Although it has been quite a challenge, students have come to the

realization that "it is ok to make mistakes and sometimes sound funny"

whenever we are trying to pronounce a word in a different language.

Middle school students are successfully performing their Spanish Speaking Countries research presentations. Through this research they have been

provided with an opportunity to relate themselves with different Spanish

speaking communities and develop a better understanding of their cultures.

And our 2015 Spanish adventure is just starting...!

Bendiciones para todos,

Sra. Velez

Dear Mr. President...

President Obama Replies to our Grade 4 Students

During the month of September the children in 4th grade typed letters to President Obama in computer class. They were very interested in finding out more about him. The letters were sent to Washington in September and much to their surprise they received a large envelope last week from the White House. The children were very excited when we opened the envelope in computer class. Inside was a variety of items and a letter to the children signed by President Obama. This was a very enjoyable experience for the students.

100th Day of School!

It's hard to believe but Thursday, February 12th was the 100th day of school! Classrooms marked the occasion with showcasing projects that contained 100 of an item, subject or event. The creativity was amazing! How many different ways can you say 100?

Mathcounts!

Four mathletes from St. Michael's Academy matched wits with the best and brightest of the Connecticut Valley in the annual Mathcounts competition. Returning eighth grader Ben Russell along with seventh graders, Cameron Dougal, Julia Puppolo, and Anthony Rodrigues represented SMA. The annual math competition was held at Hampden Charter School in Chicopee on February 7th.  Overall the team scored better than last year and Cameron Dougal finished in the top 25% overall.

The students who scored the highest on the Mathcounts school competition test were chosen for the St. Michael's Academy team. Students also needed to show an appreciation for math as well as aptitude. Mathcounts is highly competitive and being part of the competition is a great achievement.

Mathcounts is "a national enrichment club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory."  It combines the competitive spirit of athletics with academics to create an enjoyable and engaging way to demonstrate an interest in mathematics.

Congrats Mathletes!

School Cancellation/Delays

In the event of inclement weather, St. Michael's Academy follows the Springfield Public Schools cancellation notices (due to bus transportation). If Springfield Public Schools cancel school - we cancel school, if they delay school - we delay school. Please check your local television stations for announcements. We will do our best to send out a Blackboard Connect announcement to our families as well.

Prayer Corner

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us!

We pray for all St. Michael's Academy students, families, faculty, and staff, and their special intentions.

This week we pray in a special way for:
Tom Conway
Martin Wright
Thomas Henshon
Nicole D'Amour Schneider
Rev. Roy Duquette

We also remember in our prayers the deceased:
Susan J. Mitchell Russin
Velma Cross.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Our prayers continue to be with Mr. Rancitelli, who is undergoing treatment for a cancer recurrence. Each week, a different homeroom sends him cards. If your family would like to send a card, please send it to school with your child, clearly marked for Mr. Rancitelli. His family has set up a blog to write about this experience. Click here to read the blog.
