Faculty promotions 

Trustees elected the following Engineering and CS professors to appointments with indefinite tenure:

  • John D. Albertson was elected Professor with indefinite tenure, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, effective with Cornell appointment to regular professorial title, anticipated for July 2015;
  • Richard D. Robinson, Assistant Professor, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was elected Associate Professor with indefinite tenure; effective July 1, 2015;
  • Olivier Desjardins, Assistant Professor, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was elected Associate Professor with indefinite tenure, effective July 1, 2015;
  • Silvia Ferrari was elected Professor with indefinite tenure, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, effective with Cornell appointment to regular professorial title, anticipated for July 2015;
  • Hadas Kress-Gazit, Assistant Professor, Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was elected Associate Professor with indefinite tenure, effective July 1, 2015;
  • Peter I. Frazier, Assistant Professor, School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, was elected Associate Professor with indefinite tenure, effective July 1, 2015;
  • Vitaly Shmatikov,  Department of Computer Science, tenure at the rank of Professor, on or after July 1, 2015;
     
  • Hakim Weatherspoon, Department of Computer Science, tenure, with promotion to the rank of Associate Professor, will be effective July 1, 2015; 
  • J. Gregory Morrisett, Department of Computer Science, with tenure at the rank of Professor, effective with Cornell (re-)appointment to regular professorial title, anticipated for July 2015; and
     
  • Mingming Wu, Biological and Environmental Engineering, Associate Professor, has been granted tenure effective July 1, 2015.

     

Air Force awards grants to two Cornell faculty members

Cornell faculty members Christopher Batten (ECE) and Robert Shepherd (MAE) recently received Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Research Program grants.

Awards and honors
Incoming Associate Professor Kilian Weinberger (CS) was selected as Program Chair of the 2016 International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML). ICML is one of the two prime publication venues for research in machine learning, with over 1000 submissions in 2015.

Prof. Cynthia Reinhart-King (BME) is the Program Chair for the 2016 Biomedical Engineering Society to be held in Minneapolis.  The meeting will be October 5-8th, 2016 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and is projected to attract ~4000 attendees from academia and industry.  As program chair, she is responsible for the technical program.  She will work in collaboration with the Conference Co-chairs, David Odde (Minnesota) and Song Li (Berkeley). 

Prof. Marjolein van der Meulen (BME) has been elected to the newly-created position of Faculty Liaison on the Presidents Council for Cornell Women (PCCW) Steering Committee for a two-year term beginning July 1. Marjolein has been an Affinito-Stewart Grants         recipient and subsequent tenured professor, and appreciates the importance of PCCW's support of women faculty in the Cornell community

 

Matthew Milano, grad student in CS, and Ryan Elandt, grad student in MAE, were awarded the National Defense and Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowships.  

 

Joyce ( Huanhuan) Chen, BME postdoc has been selected as an inaugural recipient of the 2015 Arnold O. Beckman Postdoctoral Fellows Award. Her proposed research is titled:  Identify synthetic lethality targeting APR-or KRAS-mutation in organotypic human colorectal cancer models.  

 

Robbert van Renesse (CS) has been elected chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Operating Systems (SIGOPS).

 

McWhorter joins AAD as program assistant

AAD is happy to announce that on June 16, Melanie McWhorter will be joining the Alumni Affairs and Development team in Cornell Engineering.  She will be a Program Assistant, supporting the work of June Losurdo and Kristie Blake. She has a good record of event planning and writing and we look forward to having her join the team.

 

Most recently, Melanie has worked at Envisage Information Systems, here in Ithaca, as an Administrative Assistant on their Human Resources team. Previously, she worked for Cayuga  

Addiction Recovery Services. Melanie is a graduate of Franklin Pierce University in Keene, NH

2015-16 KIC Call for Graduate Fellowships

The Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science develops and utilizes next-generation tools for exploring the nanoscale world.  There are two graduate fellowships available through KIC, each with different eligibility requirements:

 

THE KNIGHT FAMILY FOUNDATION Graduate Fellowship in Nanoscience and Technology (KNIGHT FELLOW@KIC) is open to graduate engineering students in the 2nd or 3rd year of their Ph.D. program. 

 

THE WATT W. WEBB Graduate Fellowship in Nanoscience (WEBB@KIC) is open to Applied and Engineering Physics graduate students in the 2nd or 3rd year of their Ph.D. program.
