Computation bringing 3-D imaging to light

Photography used to be limited to flat, two-dimensional images. Today, the art and science of image capture is spurred by optics, computation and electronics, and Cornell engineers are working on the cutting edges of 3-D imaging

Engineers at Cornell and clinicians at Weill Cornell Medical College have created a comprehensive mouse model of exactly how colorectal tumors behave in real life, not just in a petri dish.

Merrill Scholars Awarded: Seven in Engineering!

35 seniors were named Class of 2015 Merrill Presidential Scholars. Highlighting the importance of teacher-mentors in the lives of students, the Merrill Presidential Scholars Program allows each student to recognize one high school teacher and one Cornell faculty member who has influenced them.

College of Engineering Awardees:

  • Thalia Aoki of McLean, Virginia, honoring Aaron Sacks of Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology and Ludmilla Aristilde of BEE.

It is open to senior lecturers, assistant, associate, and full professors and senior research and extension associates.  The cost for non-CALS participants is $1,000 which includes all meeting materials, breakfast, and lunch each day.

Registration is done on-line. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Stewart at 254-2352 or [email protected].

International consortium collaborating to improve wind farm efficiency
An intensive field campaign based on international collaboration is underway at the Wind Energy Institute of Canada (WEICan) Prince Edward Island site. The experiment known as PEIWEE (Prince Edward Island Wind Energy Experiment) is undertaking an ambitious set of measurements across a range of spatial scales at the existing Institute's wind farm. In addition to Institute's staff, there are teams from Cornell, York and Western Universities studying wind turbine wakes and boundary-layer effects from the cliff edge to the turbines.

The project designer Rebecca Barthelmie, Professor and Croll Faculty Fellow in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University said 'By combining our instrumentation and effort we can quantify turbine interactions with the atmosphere at a cascading set of spatial scales showing the three dimensional properties of turbine wakes."
CEE Prof. Kulhawy Passes Away
Professor Kulhawy joined the faculty of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell in 1976 as an Associate Professor. By 1981 he had become a full Professor. In 1980 he also joined the graduate faculty in Geological Sciences at Cornell.
Awards and honors

Rehan Kaluarachchi, B.S., M.E., '15 - Co-creator Sibley School Class of 2015 Senior Video

Rehan is a regular cowboy and calls Houston, TX his home. On campus, he is involved in the Engineering Career Fair Team, Cornell University New Student Programs, and independent research. In his free time, he enjoys sleeping and running but never at the same time. After graduation, Rehan will be working full-time at a major aerospace engineering company in St. Louis, MO as a structural and payload design engineer.

Aaron Stolicker, B.S., M.E., '15

Co-creator Sibley School Class of 2015 Senior Video

Aaron is a senior Mechanical Engineering student who is also pursuing a minor in Theater. Aaron is originally from the small town of Baldwinsville. New York, just outside of Syracuse. After graduation Aaron will be working for a themed entertainment attraction design firm south of Boston, and he couldn't be more thrilled to be starting out in his dream job. He thanks Cornell for all the good times and wonderful opportunities he has been afforded!

Charles Zhang selected as the 2015 Sibley School Outstanding Senior Award

Charles Zhang served as the Vice President for the 2014-2015 school year, as well as serving as the Newsletter Editor since 2013. His career in ASME began as the Webmaster in 2012 at the end of his freshman year. As well as coordinating events with the rest of the board, Charles spearheaded communications with the national ASME organization as well as writing newsletters throughout each semester.

Hiu Fat (Eric) Tse selected for the Werring Walter Prize for Excellence in Studies.  Hiu Fat Tse is pursuing a dual degree in mechanical engineering and economics. His interest in energy saving technology motivated him to conduct research projects with Professor Zhang that analyzes net energy metering policy and supports Tompkins' development of electric vehicle charging stations.  Selected as one of the ten finalist teams out of more than 700 teams in the world, he will also be representing Cornell to compete in the Go Green in the City 2015 competition hosted by Schneider Electric at Paris, France this summer.
