Computer Science to mark 50 years with three-day symposium

Computers are not all that new. Cornell's Department of Computer Science goes back 50 years.

The department will celebrate its golden anniversary with a series of events beginning with a reception the evening of Sept. 30 for some 150 former students who are expected to return to campus. The following day and a half will be devoted to a symposium in G10 Biotech, featuring speakers who are Cornell CS alumni now in faculty and industry positions across the nation, along with current and former Cornell faculty members. Attendance is limited to CS faculty and alumni.

NAE Frontiers of Engineering Education symposium

Erica Dawson, Kit-Yee "Daisy" Fan and Roseanna Zia have been selected for the National Academy of Engineering's Frontiers of Engineering Education symposium. Faculty members who are developing and implementing innovative educational approaches in a variety of engineering disciplines will come together for the 2-1/2-day event, where they can share ideas, learn from research and best practice in education, and leave with a charter to bring about improvement in their home institution. The attendees were nominated by NAE members or deans and chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants. The symposium will be held Oct. 26-29 in Irvine, Calif.    http://www.nae.edu/Projects/MediaRoom/20095/107830/122384.aspx

Workshop:  Enhancing Lecture Presentation Techniques to Engage Learners

Sponsored by the McCormick Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute.

Tuesday, October 14, 2014.  2:00 - 4:00 PM, Olin 155

There are two components to an effective lecture: material and presentation. This workshop will teach specific, clear presentation skills that enhance how successfully material is delivered. Led by Eliza van Cort, presentation coach and founder of the Actor's Workshop of Ithaca. The seminar will be highly individualized and mostly hands on learning. Professors will leave with enhanced public speaking skills, and individualized skills tailored to their unique lecturing style. Due to the targeted instruction each professor will receive, this seminar is capped at seven faculty.
