Engineering news

Cornell's new Building Dashboard website provides raw, real-time energy data - in a clear, unobstructed way - to educate the community with a goal to reduce campus energy consumption and step toward a smaller carbon footprint.

To help farmers keep cows cool, Cornell engineers are collaborating on a multidisciplinary research project supported by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) that could provide an alternative to the fans, misters, sprinklers and other heat mitigation strategies typically used.

CCMR hosts clean energy grant workshop

The Cornell Center for Materials Research will host a workshop by NEXUS-NY Executive Director Doug Buerkle Wednesday, November 6, at noon in 700 Clark Hall.

NEXUS-NY is a 5-year, $6 million NYSERDA-sponsored initiative that aims to accelerate the commercialization of clean energy innovations across New York State. Buerkle will describe how the new program works with, and benefits, faculty researchers, students, and others interested in the commercial potential of their clean energy research. Among the topics discussed are the ways NEXUS-NY will:

  • Provide seed-funding of more than $50,000 per team
  • Educate program participants on "lean start-up" methodology
  • Link technology teams with experienced mentors and investors
  • Teach technology teams to test the commercial potential of their inventions using a structured, low-risk process without leaving the university setting
Registration is free and a lunch will be served.
CCMR awards Fall 2013 JumpStart grants

Two materials science and engineering professors were among four Cornell faculty members awarded Fall 2013 JumpStart grants by the Cornell Center for Materials Research.

Cerion Enterprises of Rochester will collaborate with Professor Emmanuel Giannelis to develop a new nano ceria material that has a very high weight suspension density for use as a novel lubricant/anticorrosion material.

ENrG Inc. of Buffalo will collaborate with Professor Bruce Van Dover to develop coatings for flexible ceramic substrates to provide a suitable surface for the growth of semiconductor materials; ultimately, as a roll-to-roll process for the production of photovoltaic solar cells.

The CCMR JumpStart program is designed to assist New York small businesses develop and improve their products through university collaborations. Projects receive up to $5,000 in matching funds for project costs that include faculty and research staff, facilities, services, supplies, and materials.

The deadline to apply for Spring 2014 projects is Oct. 31.

Shell launches student competition

Shell Ideas360 is a global competition organized by Shell International Limited for students to develop game-changing ideas for tackling energy, water and food issues. Students can participate as an individual or as part of a team of up to three people. The target is to develop an innovative idea related to energy, water, or food. The competition website provides a workspace to share draft ideas with the Shell Ideas360 community and for submitting a finalized idea for evaluation by Dec. 1.

Mathworks to hold technical seminars

Mathworks will hold two technical seminars at Cornell on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in 334 Morrison Hall.  Some programming experience is assumed, but no MATLAB experience is required.

9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Session 1: Programming Techniques with MATLAB

Learn about the programming capabilities of MATLAB and how you can use them to work more productively.

1:00 - 3:30 p.m.: Session 2: Parallel Computing with MATLAB and Simulink

Learn high-level programming constructs that allow you to create parallel MATLAB applications and run Simulink models in parallel without low-level programming.

A continental breakfast will be provided prior to the morning session; a light snack and refreshments will be provided prior to the afternoon session.

A complete session description and registration is online. Contact

Angelo D'Amato with any questions at 508-647-7516.

Alcoser memorial set for Sunday

A memorial celebration for Turi Alcoser will be held Sunday, Nov. 10 at 3:00 p.m. in Sage Chapel. His parents will be attending and at least one of his brothers. The Department of Biomedical Engineering will be hosting the reception following in Weill Hall. Barb Knuth will speak on behalf of the university and the graduate school.

Alcoser, a 23-year-old Ph.D. student died on Monday, Sept. 23. He entered Cornell in June 2012 to pursue graduate work in biomedical engineering, after completing his undergraduate degree at Carnegie Mellon.

His research focused on growing and characterizing the biophysical properties of breast cancer tumor cells. While at Cornell, he won a Young Investigator Award from the Physical Sciences Oncology Network, a FASEB MARC travel award, and an honorable mention in the 2013 National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Awards. He was a Cornell Sloan Scholar.

Awards and honors

Electrical engineering graduate student Biswajeet Guha has received an Intel Ph.D. Fellowship. The program awards fellowships to exceptional Ph.D. candidates pursuing leading-edge innovation in fields related to Intel's business and research interests. Selected students receiving this award are recognized as being amongst the best in their specific areas of research.

Electrical and computer engineering Assistant Professor Christopher Batten has been selected by Intel for an Early Career Faculty award for his research on energy-efficient parallel computer architecture. The program seeks the top early career faculty at leading U.S. universities through a competitive and rigorous selection process.

Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Emeritus John Abel was awarded the Eduardo Torroja Medal by the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures September 23, during its annual Symposium, held this year in Wroclaw, Poland. This is the association's highest honor and is named for the renowned Spanish engineer who founded the association of engineers and architects in 1959. Abel is past president of the group, having served two 3-year terms from 2006 to 2012.
