Professor Emeritus Robert K. Finn dies
Robert Kaul Finn '41, a pioneer in the field of
biochemical engineering and professor
emeritus of chemical and biomolecular
engineering at Cornell, died in his
sleep at home in Ithaca Nov. 3. He was 92.

 

ChemE car 'Zapdos' takes first place at nationals
The Cornell ChemE Car team has done it again. For the third time since 2008, the student engineering team won the national American Institute of Chemical Engineers ChemE Car competition, Oct. 28, in Pittsburgh.

Ofer Leshed appointed as new director of finance and budget

We are very pleased to announce that Ofer Leshed will join the College of Engineering on January 2 as the director of finance and budget. Ofer has been employed at Cornell since 2004 in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He is currently the director of finance and administration for the Cornell University Hospital for Animals. Ofer has prior corporate experience as a finance manager. He holds a B.A. in economics and business administration and an M.B.A. from Haifa University. Please join us in welcoming Ofer. 

Faculty meeting and holiday reception

All engineering faculty are invited to attend the Faculty Meeting and Holiday Reception on Tuesday, December 4, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., in Room G10, in the Biotechnology Building. A reception will follow the formal meeting. The agenda includes an update on the College.

Engineering places high in poster competition

Earlier this month, during Cornell's Trustee Council Annual Meeting, the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future held its fourth annual sustainability poster session, featuring 15 research projects funded by the Center. First place was awarded to Todd Cowen (Civil and Environmental Engineering) for his "Development of a Low-Cost Robust, Sustainable Water-Powered Pump." Chas Williamson's (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) and Ph.D. student Stacey Chan's project, "Novel Mini-Turbine Arrays: Energy Harvesting Using Small-scale Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines for the Urban Environment," was selected for second place.

Library hosts coffee hour

The Engineering Library presents the Fall 2012 Coffee Hour Book Talk, on Tuesday, December 4. The talk will feature Steven Strogatz, Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Mathematics and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and author of the New York Times column, "Elements of Math." The talk is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., in the Carpenter Hall Library Study Space. The Library will raffle off Strogatz's latest title, "Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math, from One to Infinity." Light refreshments will be served.

Awards and honors

Walker Grimshaw (Biological and Environmental Engineering) and Natali Vannoy (Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) have been selected as 2012-2013 Frank and Rosa Rhodes Scholarship recipients, based on their contributions to the College of Engineering through academic achievement and leadership.

Free introduction to FileMaker class offered in Engineering 

The IT Service Group is organizing an Intro to FileMaker class. Filemaker is providing the trainer for these sessions and space is limited. The primary audience is administrative staff, but anyone who is interested is welcome to attend. The hands-on class begins with two spreadsheets (students and course enrollments) and finishes with a rudimentary database for tracking students from acceptance to graduation.

The class is being offered twice, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 10, and 9:00 a.m. to noon, Friday, January 11. Both classes will be held in Room B07, Upson Hall.

Information Update is published biweekly during the academic year and monthly over the summer and winter break. If you have information to be distributed to the college community, send it to Info Update. Announcements should be limited to about 100 words, perhaps by referencing a Web site for more information, and can be repeated in one subsequent issue on request.

The next issue will be distributed on December 12; the deadline for submissions is Friday December 7, at 5 p.m. Information received after the deadline will be published in a future issue if appropriate.
