Examining the future world of work: Aging and the workplace "The big picture is that we all age eventually..."

In examining the future world of work, ThirdQuarter thought it a good idea to start by looking at the bigger picture, in terms of our aging population and the workplace. Sociologist Ellie Berger, PhD has been studying aging and work for about 20 years - ever since she was doing her undergrad at McMaster in the mid-90's. Her interest led her to interview HR professionals on aging and the workplace as part of her undergrad thesis.
"Older workers are often excluded from training opportunities, as they're not viewed as a good investment. The thing with ageism in the workplace, is that it's really an extension of general attitudes on aging. We have this idea that we'd like to live a long, healthy life - but don't account for attitudes related to the getting older part. And our society currently doesn't value its older members much."

The key issue for Berger in all this is ageism, especially since governments are encouraging people to work longer, through raising the pension age for, as well as eliminating mandatory retirement - yet the attitudes and practices in the workplace haven't changed to keep up with that.
