The Silk Road: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Teaching about East Asia
The "Silk Road" refers to a series of routes that crisscrossed Eurasia from the first millennium BCE through the middle of the second millennium CE. Music, art, technology, belief systems, and stories were carried along this ancient trade route. This course will knit literature, geography, economics, history, art, and music into an interdisciplinary exploration of Asia's diversity and interdependence.
15 Weeks & Postings: Weekly asynchronous sessions with three postings due per week - one each on content, pedagogy, and response to others' postings.
Faculty: Karen Kane, Columbia University and experts on nomadic cultures, art, and music.
Credit: 36 professional development hours and qualification to apply for a study tour in summer 2014.
Deadline for Registration and Enrollment: February 20th for both AFE or the ASPDP (optional for NYC teachers).

Why is this program free? The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) is generously funded by the Freeman Foundation as a multi-year initiative to encourage and facilitate teaching and learning about East Asia in elementary and secondary schools nationwide.
NCTA is a premier provider of professional development on East Asia. Asia for Educators (AFE) receives funding from the U.S. Department of Education and from the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership for simulcast programs on Japan and East Asia.
This program has been specifically created for educators with literature and art experience. We will be hosting other free simulcasts tailored to different fields.
