August News "Second Edition"??
palmtree_hammock.jpg
Summer is here and it seems our "Spring Minutes" went on vacation from our August newsletter. Carolyn's corner visited a number of locations including the location where our minutes were supposed to be. Please enjoy this "Second Edition" of August news and hopefully all our links will stay in their places!

Generally speaking, our WSFMC clubs will begin their new year in September, and some are taking in new members and new Junior Clubs/Studios, and together we will journey through the coming year, sharing our musical gifts. At this time, helping new people, as well as, reminding those who are just getting into the club experience, we should be reviewing our By-Laws and Standing Rules.  It's amazing what you can discover, each time you take a good look at how your club or organization operates!

The individual members of our clubs are an integral part of a club's success.  Orientation and leadership training can help each one of us be more successful by helping to build a sense of ownership in the WSFMC and in the NFMC. It is necessary because it can give each new member a better understanding of the goals of the Federation.

The presidents of each club in the WSFMC will lead members along the way by delegating, empowering, mentoring, and sponsoring. There are many tasks to be done like reports, news articles, taking pictures, and attending and supporting the arts councils and school musical performances and board meetings.

STEP UP! All members need to be involved in the club's activities. As a new member becomes a part of a club, a mentor should be selected to help him/her feel welcomed, valued, and involved.  Orientation and leadership training can be done by keeping members informed through shadow leadership and opportunities to serve with a mentor.  Melody Lines always provides information concerning the clubs in Washington State, and gives everyone an opportunity to share successes and needs within the state organization.

THRIVE!! We must realize that we have the important task of keeping music in our communities.  Remember... that YOU, as a member of the Federation, can influence the world of music. You are the most powerful tool there is to recreate local, state, and national policy, but... You must be educated to fulfill a meaningful and necessary role in our organization's legacy!

I would like to hear from the clubs in Washington. PLEASE CLICK HERE for a form that I would like each Senior Club to fill out and send to me.  I want to know more about your efforts in the area of orientation and leadership.  Please send this report to me so that we can continue to help each other and support each other in the best way possible!

Book Review
Sight Reading and Rhythm Every Day by Helen Marlais  with Kevin Olson is a great addition to any studio, regardless of the method book you are currently using. Each unit is divided into 5 days and contains a sight reading and  rhythm activity for students to complete each day. Lesson day activities include a short sight reading duet at the end of each unit. My students loved the way these books are organized as it did not take long to complete the daily activities. I saw great results and improvement in sight reading and rhythm across all ages and levels in my studio after only 6 weeks. Why not try a contest? My students enjoyed earning their "Super Sightreader Certification Badges"!

The Hills are Alive with
The Von Trapps
As you may have heard, the highlight of the NFMC Portland convention was a concert by the Von Trapps, descendants of one of the Von Trapp boys from The Sound of Music, who now live in Portland. I was sent a fabulous article about the Von Trapps that has fascinating facts about the entire family, the making of the movie and more. Please click here to read the full article, from The Smithsonian Magazine.
