Thank You for Your Input!
|
The survey that the Wallkill Public Library has had in circulation since late May is now unofficially over. Which is to say, you can no longer access it on Survey Monkey and you won't find the forms at the circ desk anymore. However, if you received a survey in an issue of The Wallkill Valley Times and you've yet to hand it in, you're still welcome to do so.
The library will use the information gleaned from the survey responses to formulate our five-year strategic plan, with the goal, of course, of providing our users and community with services that meet or (hopefully) exceed their expectations.
But just because the survey is over doesn't mean we're no longer interested in your input. Please feel free to drop us a line with your suggestions, critiques, and opinions. You're the reason we're here! And thanks to all who participated in the survey - your feedback is invaluable! |
It's Not Too Late to Log Your Books! Don't let your kids get "dumber in the summer" - start a lifelong love of reading this season with the library's book-logging program as incentive!
Not only are the number of books read during the summer directly related to academic gains, it's been shown in repeated studies that those who don't read during the break experience the "summer slide," a loss of reading skills that has a noticeable impact on school performance.
The cure? A book! It doesn't have to be War and Peace, either - whatever your child enjoys reading is the best material to get him, be it a magazine article, short stories, or even graphic novels or comic books. It all keeps their literacy skills sharp, and it's all loggable!
To take part in the library's book-logging, simply email cthorenz@rcls.org with your child's name, age, and the title of the book he's reading. Remember to put "book log" in the subject heading of the email. Participants will be invited to the library's top-reader reception and get front-row seats to this year's Summer Reading Program finale, featuring the Magic Variety Show with Steve Johnson. |
Important Dates Coming Up for Quilters
An embroidery workshop is set to take place during Textile Tuesday on July 26. The needlework project will feature a counted cross stitch wall-hanging or decorative box. Though supplies are very limited, there are still one or two boxes and boards left - if you haven't signed up but are interested in attending, contact Carolyn at cthorenz@rcls.org or 895-3707.
Though there will not be a formal meeting of the Quilters' Circle at 6:30 p.m. July 27, the community room will be open for those who would like to get together and work on something.
And although the Lion Brand Trunk Show has come and gone, Log Cabin Fabrics will be at the library at noon Aug. 16 for their own show. Register now via our online calendar or by contacting Carolyn!

Sale Coming Up at the Book Shop!
Whether you're still looking forward to your summer getaway or just planning on spending some free time at home, one vital ingredient to the recipe for relaxation is a good book. You can replenish your supply at the Friends' Used Book Shop, during their upcoming bag sale!
On July 28, 29, and 30, and then again on August 4, 5, and 6, the store will be charging just $2 for a bag of books!
Located on the corner of Bridge Street and Park Avenue, the book shop is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
You can browse through the shop's hefty collection before you even get in your car by visiting their online catalog.
Many thanks to Mike DeMeo and his staff of dedicated volunteers for all the hard work they put in to organizing and running the shop!

Autism Subject of New Titles
Three new books were recently ordered that should be available at the library soon:
- A Parent's Guide to High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder: How to Meet the Challengers and Help Your Child Thrive, by Sally Ozonoff
- Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism, by Barry M. Prizant
- The Autism Activities Handbook: Activities to Help Kids Communicate, Make Friends, and Learn Life Skills, by Catherine Pascuas
The library is in the process of reevaluating our nonfiction selection. If you have a title or subject in mind that you feel is underrepresented on our shelves, never hesitate to drop off a suggestion at the circ desk or via email, to lpalmer@rcls.org.

Concerts on the Lawn Set for Next Week!
Adam Kuliszewski, along with Chris Earley and Victor Izzo, will be presenting two concerts next week on the library lawn.
On Tuesday, July 26, the Wallkill Summer Music Beginner Band, Junior Band, Orchestra, and Jazz Band will perform with the SUNY Ulster Jazz Band.
On Wednesday, July 27, the Wallkill Summer Music Senior Band will play with the SUNY Ulster College/Community Band.
Both concerts start at 7 p.m. In the event of rain, the concerts' times won't change, but the performances will be held at SUNY Ulster (491 Cottekill Rd, Stone Ridge, NY 12484.) Keep a lookout on the library's Facebook page for updates if the weather looks iffy. Otherwise, bring a chair or blanket and some refreshments to the library lawn and enjoy!

Lion Brand Trunk Show a Roaring Success!
It was a day of fiber fun for all! On Tuesday, July 21st, over 70 yarn enthusiasts met with Lion Brand® Yarn's Brand Ambassador, Shira Blumenthal - a fifth-generation member of the family that has owned and operated Lion Brand Yarns for over 137 years. Shira travels the country to speak with knit and crochet guilds, appears in videos about Lion Brand® products, behind the scenes videos about the company, and stars in a new video series called Tea with Shira.
Shira gave the group a bit of Lion Brand history and showcased the brand's newest yarns and colors -- some exclusive to LionBrand.com and not available in stores -- and garments made from those fibers. Participants had the opportunity to see, touch and feel the yarns firsthand, and received a terrific goodie bag stuffed with Lion Brand products.
If anyone is interested in a possible field-trip to the Lion Brand Yarn Studio in NYC and the Lion Brand Yarn Outlet in Carlstadt, NJ, please contact Carolyn Thorenz at cthorenz@rcls.org.
