It's Not Too Late

to Join the SRP!
This season's Summer Reading Program got off to a great start last Wednesday, when more than 225 people crowded the library lawn to see the Traveling Lantern Theatre!

But just because you may have missed the opener, don't think you can't participate! Some programs are still taking registrants, and you have until August 10 to start reading and logging books.

For a list of available programs and events, visit our website calendar. Don't forget that even when a program is full, it pays to sign up on the waiting list - you may very well get a call that there's a last-minute opening!
You Can Help THIS Library Transform
Libraries transform, as the American Library Association's public awareness campaign says. And it's true - our own little library transforms young kids into readers, the out-of-work into the happily employed, the computer illiterate into the tech-savvy, and more.

Now you have a chance to help US transform into an even better resource, gathering place, and community center by running for a spot on our board of trustees. All that's required is a commitment to attend one meeting a month and help our dynamic, energetic board keep the library on its path toward success.

Our election, this year, will be held on September 20. Interested candidates must be residents of the Town of Shawangunk and the Wallkill Central School District. They are required to have petitions filled out with 50 signatures from other library district residents by September 7.

If you're interested in learning more, contact Lisa Palmer at lpalmer@rcls.org, or at 895-3707.
Just Stay Calm and Color On!

Are you ready for a day to relax and color? August 2nd is National Coloring Book Day! Join our group of colorists on Tuesdays between 6:30 and 8 PM.

Recent studies have found that not only is coloring enjoyable and relaxing, it may actually be good for you too! A recent article from USA Today fills in the details...

"Coloring not only evokes happy memories of childhood; the act can also foster a sense of well-being and offer a relaxing respite from our digital world. Crafters have known this intuitively for years.

An accumulation of research shows that these creative activities can help you de-stress from everyday pressures. Recent studies suggest that structured, rhythmic endeavors such as coloring, knitting, crocheting or quilting are particularly beneficial because they ease you into a meditative state of mind that allows you to push away negative thoughts and worries.

"These activities engage your hands as well as your mind and your focus," says art therapist Lacy Mucklow, the author of several best-selling Zen-themed coloring books. "Plus, the repetitive actions release serotonin, the brain transmitter responsible for relaxation."

Numerous studies have looked into how crafting benefits mood and physical health. In a 2006 study co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and several federal health agencies, researchers found that adults 65 or older who engaged in creative activities such as making jewelry, painting or writing had better overall health, made fewer visits to the doctor, used less medication and had fewer health problems than non-crafters.

Stress reduction is a top reason Cathy Simocko-Smith, 59, a professional gardener in Bridgeport, Conn., enjoys coloring. "Coloring at night while I'm watching TV helps quiet my mind," she says. "I can really lose myself in it, and it stops me from thinking about my work and the stresses in my life."
