Summer Reading Program is Coming Up!
Registration for this year's Summer Reading Program, "On Your Mark, Get Set... READ!" starts June 15, and this year it's only a click away!

You can become a summer member by registering for a program on our library website. Registration gives you a personal invitation to our kick-off and finale celebrations. Special performances, raffles, book logs, the top reader reception, and an ice cream social are only a few of the perks.

If you choose to be a member who only logs in books for school incentives or contests, click on the "Register Here" button on the homepage of our website and fill in the information requested. Once registered, simply send the titles and authors of the books you want to log to cthorenz@rcls.org, with "Book Log" in the subject heading. Logs will be tallied at the library. Members who have recorded books will be invited to a Top Reader Reception and receive front-row seats for the finale.

Either way, the fun starts June 29 at 6 p.m., with the Summer Reading Program kick-off. Join us for a summer of discovery and fun.
We Want to Hear from You!
The Wallkill Public Library is in the process of developing its new five-year strategic plan. We're taking this time to once again evaluate how best we can serve our community. So the most important part of the whole process is you!

Over the next few weeks, we'll be distributing and collecting a survey to help us plan for the future. Hard copies of the survey are now available at the library and will soon be sent out as an insert in the Wallkill Valley Times. You can also access the same survey electronically here. Nine short questions and you're done!

We appreciate your help in this and will do all we can to make sure we meet your current and future needs. Thank you!

Memorial Day Ceremony
Will Be Held on Library Lawn
The hamlet's annual Memorial Day parade will be at 11 a.m. Monday. Following the parade, a ceremony will be held on the front lawn of the library. During this time, the library will be open to accommodate guests and anyone else who wants to stop by. But for those going away for the holiday, have no fear - no fines will be incurred for items due on that day, as long as they're returned by Tuesday (May 31).

In honor of Memorial Day, the library is extending the donation drop off for Operation Gratitude until May 31. So if you do stop by the library for Monday's event, it will be a perfect opportunity to bring along contributions for the package the library is sending out to our troops. Thanks to all who already donated items and made out cards for the project! With your help, the library will be sending out a package with much-needed items and kind thoughts.
Teen Volunteer Orientation for SRP
Summer is a great time to store up community service hours for school, religion or upcoming college applications. Lend a hand with Summer Reading Program activities, sports, crafts, cooking and tech while you build a resume and community hours needed for future use. Orientation for volunteers will be held Wednesday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. Students who participate will receive a letter at the end of the summer stating the number of hours worked. Be creative, have fun and get some on-the-job training as you go. Did we mention snacks and a pizza party?

Come find out what it's all about!! Call to register.
History Comes Alive at the Library
Thanks to children's coordinator Carolyn Thorenz, the library recently played host to not only representatives from the New Windsor Cantonment, but 86 fourth-graders from Ostrander Elementary School, as well!

The students enjoyed a presentation that featured tales of life as a soldier during the American Revolution, and were treated to a medical demonstration, as well. Unfortunately the day's pouring rain put the kibosh on the planned musket demonstration, but we hope the field trip was a fun and enriching experience, all the same!

Thanks to the Cantonment staff for coming out and the kids and teachers for braving the soggy weather to visit us!
Have Programs, Will Travel
As part of the Wallkill Public Library's outreach efforts, a recent visit was made to Elsie's Meadow senior apartments so that library staff could describe some of the upcoming programming coming their way!

Computer workshops, cooking classes, and a homebound delivery service were among the offerings promoted at the gathering. Staffer Danielle Cancel cooked up a delicious Asian salad to share with attendees, distributing samples and the recipe at the end of the session.

The library is excited about the future opportunities for outreach at Elsie's and beyond. If you have an idea for a program, don't hesitate to reach out to us at 895-3707, or lpalmer@rcls.org.
Upcoming Events for Textilephiles!
Textile Tuesday is going strong and events are being planned for all sorts of handmade fun. Don't miss out on these spectacular events coming to town this summer.

Lion Brand Yarn Trunk Show will be July 19 at 1 p.m. Shira E. Blumenthal, Brand Ambassador from Lion Brand Yarn Company will be visiting to discuss new products, old favorites and all things Lion Brand. (And she's bringing goodie bags, too! Yeah!) Call 895-3707 or email cthorenz@rcls.org to reserve your seat.

Pat Cunningham from Log Cabin Fabrics in Selkirk, New York will be coming to share her quilt collection filled with history, techniques and, of course, stories on August 16 at 12 noon. Share in this wonderful show-and-tell event. Call or email cthorenz@rcls.org to register.

Our 2016 historic house tour explores the fascinating legacy of the Town of Lloyd's rural interior. Perched on a shale terrace, bounded by the Swartekill marshes on the west and the Hudson cliffs to the east, its romantic rocky ridges, ravines, streams and woodsy terrain are the heroes of Warren Sherwood's poems and town history.

Creativity and the arts play a role in this tour, which features eight of the town's most important rural homesteads dating from the early 19th century to the present. Some were occupied by artists or contain interesting collections; others were fancifully re-imagined by an artistic personality or created more recently as visions of earlier 20th-century architectural traditions. They range from unusual stone dwellings and traditional clapboard farm houses, including a "tiny" abode, to a dramatic contemporary structure on the Hudson. Most have never been open to the public.
