How Can We Make
Our Library Transform?
The American Library Association's new Libraries Transform campaign is designed to increase public awareness about all that libraries have to offer. Initiatives such as these become necessary when people start to wonder how essential a role the library plays in this age of digital technology, when books can be accessed with the swipe of your finger across your phone.

Are libraries essential?

In my opinion, it depends on the library. If you have a building that's little more than a book repository whose only visitors are those who stop in every once in a while to get some reading material, then no, probably not.

If, on the other hand, you create an organization that offers educational programming for both children and adults; if you serve as a gathering place for young moms, hobbyists of all types, and children who would otherwise be home alone; if you provide technology that makes it possible for students to graduate with honors, the unemployed to rebuild their resumes and find jobs, and researchers to learn as much as they can about just about whatever topic interests them; if you do all this and more, then, perhaps, you're coming closer to the "essential" mark.

The Wallkill Public Library, thanks in large part to a staff of hard-working and creative people, does all this. But we want to do more. And we want to do more of what YOU want, which means your input is critical. Whether you're looking for a certain genre of fiction, a wider selection of DVDs, a particular program, or more outreach efforts, we want to make sure you have it.
As the new manager of the library, my first and most important priority is to make sure we're succeeding in enriching the lives of our community members by providing services YOU deem essential. So please let us know how we can better serve you. Give us a call (895-3707) or contact us using our online form .

Stop In and Be a Friend!
The Friends of the Wallkill Public Library are welcoming spring by celebrating National Library Week throughout April.
The theme this year is Libraries Transform. Stop by and tell us how you have used the library so far this year.

Did you know that the Friends and the library offer FREE PASSES
to the Mid-Hudson Children's Museum in Poughkeepsie, Storm King, Museum Village, and - most recently - the hiking trails at Mohonk? We are also financially supporting the entertainment all summer for the Summer Reading Program. We are planning a Paint Nite and will be offering gift cards for sale for local supermarkets and stores.

During the week of April 10-16, the Friends will be serving refreshments. Make plans to come in, chat, and let us know how we can help the library meet your needs. Find out more about our Friends' Used Book Shop or inquire about volunteering. Maybe you will check us out and sign up to be a Friend.

Spring Story Time Begins!
Spring is in the air, but still making it's way through the snow and wind.  Let's start the season off on a good foot with Story Time starting back up on April 13.  Our Toddler Story Time is for ages 2-3 and begins at 11 am. Stories, songs and interactive play are all part of this weekly program that combines early literacy, fun and socialization for young book lovers. Book Buddies, at 1 p.m., is for children ages 4-5 years old.  This program is geared toward children who can work independently. Registration will be taken during the first class.

Library Outreach
Coming to Elsie's Meadow
!
Residents of Elsie's Meadow senior apartments can soon look forward to great library programs and materials, delivered right to their doorstep!

As part of the library's new homebound delivery service, books, DVDs, audiobooks, and other materials will be delivered on a regular basis to the residents of the Wallkill complex. Once or twice a week, a staff member will drop off the materials people have ordered and take back returns.

What's more, the library plans on bringing programs such as Computer Basics, Cooking Tips, and more directly to the community room of Elsie's!

This initiative is part of the library's effort to connect with and meet the needs of our community, even those who can't visit us as often as they'd like. As offerings such as our delivery service evolve, we hope to expand our outreach as much as our staffing situation allows.
Keep an eye out for future programs and offers, and don't forget to call us with your own ideas or suggestions!
Gift Cards Available Soon!
Looking for the perfect gift for that someone who's impossible to shop for? The Wallkill Public Library will soon have the answer!

The library will be selling $25 gift cards to Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, and ShopRite starting this month. Not only will you be able to pick one up in a pinch instead of driving all the way to a supermarket or department store, but a portion of the proceeds from every card sold will go toward the library!

If you're an online shopper, don't forget to use Amazon Smile and list the Wallkill Public Library as your charity when visiting Amazon.com. Every time you buy an item through that site, Amazon donates a half a percent of that purchase price to the library!

Thank you for your continued support!
Operation Gratitude
On May 20, the library would like to reach out to the military community by hosting an Operation Gratitude Collection Drive.
A complete wish list of needed items with specific details can be found on our website or online at: www.OperationGratitude.com.

Contributions or scarves from those who knit/crochet will be gratefully accepted, as well. We will be hosting additional programs to support this cause during the month of May. More information on this endeavor to support those who serve will be forthcoming soon. This year began with Operation Gratitude sending out its two millionth (!!!) care package. Let's show our support. For more information contact Carolyn Thorenz at cthorenz@rcls.org.
