Will you be our valentine?
February is Love Your Library month, and to celebrate the Wallkill Public Library is forgiving fines the week of Feb. 8-13!
There is a catch, though. In order to have your fines forgiven that week, you need to jot down why you like the library on one of our handmade valentines. Return your card to the circulation desk and that's it - we'll take care of your fines!
Please note that this offer is good for late returns only. Lost book fees and other bills must still be paid in cash.
Thanks to a generous donation by the Friends of the Library, we'll also be giving out treats and trinkets throughout the month of February! Now you have another reason to attend some of our great programming, which this month includes:
Story Time - Two sessions on Wednesdays offer stories and interactive activities for ages 2-3 (at 11 a.m.) and 4-5 (at 1 p.m.)
Valentine Making - Stop by between 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, and create a homemade card for your special someone
Carolyn's Crochet Club - Starting Feb. 10, ages 8 and up can learn to crochet from 3:30-4:30 p.m. with simple projects, yarn, and hooks that will get you on your way to learning this fun hobby
Read to Sadie - Our therapy dog will be here at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, to hear her friends in grades K-3 read to her.
Stay on top of all the library's offerings throughout the month by checking out the calendar on our website
Birds of Prey flying in next weekend
Wildlife expert Bill Robinson's presentations pack the house.
Wildlife expert Bill Robinson will be in the community room of Town Hall at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, for his popular Birds of Prey presentation.
Hawks, owls, vultures, and falcons will be among the animals discussed and showcased during the event. Flight and feeding demonstrations are part of the show, as audience members learn about the birds' adaptations for survival, their importance in the balance of nature, and the restoration of endangered species like the peregrine falcon.
Registration is required - sign up here or at the library.
New adult game night coming soon!
Interested in meeting new people and playing some games that don't involve hungry hippos or Gumdrop Mountains?
Then you're welcome to attend the first meeting of the updated Board-not-Bored group for adults! Come to the library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 and match wits with your peers. Provided games will include Bananagrams, Monopoly, Cards Against Humanity, Phase 10, and Balderdash, but you're welcome to bring your favorites, too.
Registration is required - you can sign up online here, or call the library at 895-3707.
Coding Club kicks off Feb. 10
Ages 8-11 can learn the basics of computer programming starting Feb. 10!
The library's Coding Club will use the program Scratch to interlock puzzle pieces of code and build animations, games, and more. Scratch teaches students to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively, all while designing their own projects which they then can share with others around the world.
The Coding Club will meet from 3:30-4:30 Feb. 10, 17, and 24. No need to register - this is a drop-in event. Attend one session or all three!
Friends welcome new members
The works, used book shop, and functions of the Friends of the Wallkill Public Library are instrumental in raising much of the funding that makes great programming possible.
The group is always looking for new members who are interested in volunteering whatever time and skills they prefer to helping plan and execute upcoming events.
If you'd like to help, the next Friends' meeting is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the community room of Town Hall. If you can't make it but would still like to contribute in some way, contact Adrienne at dramapearl@aol.com.
