Books Alive's final show coming up next weekend
Adrienne Perine leads a recent rehearsal at Ostrander Elementary. The school kindly allowed the library to use their gym for Books Alive! practices this season.
May 30 will be a special day for the members of the library's children's theater project, marking not only their tenth anniversary but their final performance!
Books Alive! will be on stage at the John G. Borden Middle School auditorium twice that Saturday - at 1 p.m. and again at 5 p.m.
This year's show, It's All About the Books, features a cast of 31 doing a retrospective that will combine some of the best scenes and numbers from past performances.
Many members of the 7- through 13-year-old cast have been with producers/directors Adrienne and Jim Perine since they took over the library program five years ago.
The show will again feature music by Barbara Ganin, including favorites from performances past as well as a few surprises.
Adrienne Gelfand-Perine said that though rehearsals weren't without their challenges, the performers rose to the occasion and worked hard to pull the show together. "We have been privileged to  have brought the program to new levels, giving the children of the Wallkill community an opportunity to share their dramatic gifts," she added.
Suggested donations will be taken at the door on the day of the performances - $5 for adults, $20 for families of four or more, and free for children under 5.
Refreshments will be on sale outside the auditorium.

Textile Saturday offers wealth of activities
Christine Adams offered a felting demonstration during last week's Textile Saturday.
Handcrafters of all types showed up for the library's Textile Saturday event last weekend.
Twenty-seven attendees connected with the library's Quilters' Circle and networked with other craft enthusiasts during the event, which was organized by library staffer Carolyn Thorenz.
Demonstrations were offered throughout the day. Information on upcoming projects like the Mystery Block Quilt was shared as visitors learned more about the various quilting, sewing, knitting, and other craft activities the library offers on a regular basis.

Cards provide discounts to local shops
If you enjoy shopping locally and supporting your hometown businesses, now is your chance to get some deals in the process!
Supporters of Music Education, a parent volunteer organization that supports music education in the schools, is selling discount cards that are now available at the library!
This year, three cards are being sold - one for Wallkill, one for Newburgh, and another for Middletown. The cards provide discounts at both local and chain stores and restaurants. Take your pick or buy them all, and receive discounts at local eateries like China Kitchen and Elsie's Place; stores such as Adams Fairacre Farms and Modell's Sporting Goods; and a variety of other shops, restaurants, and services.
Each card is good for about a year and features two sides of coupons that can be used again and again until the cards expire.
You can purchase the discount card of your choice at the circulation desk.
Users get access to more print material
Just a reminder that from now until October, users can access more new print material than ever before, right from their home library!
Libraries in the Ramapo Catskill system of which Wallkill's a member have opened up the reserve process so that patrons can put a hold on whatever print items they want, no matter how new they are.
Previously, when a new book was released, its home library restricted reserves so that only that library's users could put a hold on the item. So if a user from Middletown wanted to place a hold on, say, Wallkill's copy of Missoula, that request would be denied - only Wallkill users would be able to reserve the library's copy of that item.
Now, however, users are able to place holds on whatever print item they want, no matter how new it is. The item's home library puts its own patrons at the top of their holding queues, as well, so if you and a user from Newburgh are vying for that copy of Missoula on the Wallkill shelf, and you're a Wallkill patron, you'll get it first. This process is being used on a trial basis until the fall.
So if  you notice that Wallkill's shelves are a little emptier than usual, fear not. This process actually works in your favor -just remember to reserve the books you want!
Resources available for caregivers
The White House Conference on Aging has compiled a list of federal resources for caregivers from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, and ten other federal organizations.
Resources include information on Medicare and Medicaid, Alzheimer's disease, support networks that help relieve the stress of caregiving, and much more.
You can find the guide here, and also on the Wallkill Public Library website's Reference and Research page.
