Online tools let you brush up on testing, career skills
Tis the season for standardized testing, and if you're looking to brush up for the SAT, GRE, civil service tests, or just about any exam, you can study up with the library's online offerings.
Not only does Cengage Learning provide more than 300 practice tests and courses as well as dozens of ebooks with valuable study material, the site also offers information on over 4,000 accredited schools, a scholarship search, and - for job hunters - a resume builder and career modules that cover subjects ranging from career changes to salary negotiations.
The best thing about this invaluable resource is that it's free to Wallkill Public Library users. All you need is your card number to gain access to the site and its countless educational and career tools.
Cengage Learning is just one of the many resources available through the many databases offered by the Ulster County InfoPortal. Library card holders are also able to gain free access to Mango (a comprehensive course that offers lessons in over 45 languages), genealogy sites, the movie-streaming service IndieFlix, and much more.
Don't overlook these offerings by settling for some outdated study guide or paying a fortune for Rosetta Stone - take advantage of these great resources soon!

Quilters donate item to Historical Society
Terry Ryther of the Quilters' Circle helps hold up the quilt being donated to the historical society.
The Wallkill Public Library Quilters' Circle members have been busy this winter, creating a beautiful quilt to be donated to the Historical Society of Shawangunk and Gardiner.
The ladies worked on the quilt for the past six to eight months during Textile Tuesdays in the community room of Town Hall. Now they're ready to sew the batting onto the back and attend the Historical Society's May 6 meeting, where they'll show the group their progress as well as join a discussion about the history of quilting and offer a demonstration.
The Historical Society plans on raffling the quilt off to raise funds for their organization.
Textile Tuesdays take place in the community room of Town Hall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Handcrafters of all skill levels are welcome - quilters as well as those who knit, crochet, do paper crafts, and more! Call Carolyn Thorenz for more information at 895-3707 or email her at cthorenz@rcls.org.
Are you ready for the summer?
Ready or not (and who's not?), here it comes....registration for the library's Summer Reading Program begins June 8!
The program itself will run from June 30 to Aug. 6. This year's theme is Every Hero Has a Story, and we're eager to see your little heroes (and heroines, of course) at our many events and programs!
Registration, signups, and book logging will be super easy this year, as the library rolls out its completely online system! No more jotting down books your kids have read on scrap paper or rummaging through folders to find your child's record in the children's room!
We're excited about the upcoming season and hope that you are, too - stay tuned for more details!
Mohonk offers free month membership
It's worth the hike to catch some of the breathtaking views offered at the Mohonk Preserve.
Mohonk Preserve is offering a free, one-month membership to all Ulster County residents!
Visitors can pick up their passes between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. April 23 through 26 at the Preserve Visitor Center. Passes will also be available at the Spring Farm Trailhead, but only on April 25 and 26. Proof of residency is required.
The offer is part of a campaign to make Ulster the healthiest county in New York. Right now, the county ranks a not-very-impressive 21 out of the state's 62 counties.
The membership passes will be good through May 21.
Library to soon offer museum passes
Free passes to area museums and cultural centers will soon be available at the circulation desk!
Wallkill Public Library members will be able to either check or sign the passes out. Popular area attractions like the Mid-Hudson Children's Museum, Museum Village, and the Storm King Art Center are participating in the program, so a fun day can be had no matter what your kids' ages!
Keep an eye on the library's website for availability.
