Spring into a new hobby
The library's Knit and Crochet Club meets each Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Grab your stash, and if you don't have one, it's the perfect time to gather some fat quarter faves and join the fun. Afraid to get started? Don't be. It's easier than you think when there are helping hands to advise.
The library's various textile groups are busier than ever, gathering each Tuesday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. in the community room of Town Hall and - in the case of the knitters and crocheters - meeting at 6:30 p.m. every Thursday at the library.
On May 6, the Quilters' Circle will be making a presentation to the Historical Society of Shawangunk and Gardiner. They will offer a brief summary of the history of quilting and show samples of historic quilts that tell a story. The group is currently working on a quilt to donate to the society for a raffle.
On Saturday, May 16, the library will host Textile Time to share the artistic beauty of handmade items. Whether your specialty is quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, jewelry, felting, paper art, or scrapbooking, this is an opportunity to work on a favorite project and network with fellow textile artisans. The event will take place in the community room of Town Hall from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. A demo table will be available for anyone who wants to try their hand at paper-piece quilting.
It's during the May 16 event that the first Mystery Quilt Block will be revealed, as well
The Mystery Quilt Block will be an ongoing program wherein a 12X12 square will be revealed each month. Every time a block is revealed, participants will receive instructions and a tutorial on how to replicate it. Quilters will just need to supply their own fabric. Once all the blocks are completed, they can be put together for a nine-patch lap quilt, pillows, or other project - it's up to the quilter. It will be a great way to learn new patterns, stitches, and techniques.

Gardening a way to bond, give back
If you're looking for a way to spend quality time with your family come the warmer weather, the town community garden might be the perfect solution!
Lauren Diener is recruiting helping hands for the Stewart Addison Crowell Community Garden, a tribute to her grandfather, the longtime library trustee and respected community leader who originally started the garden. Interested participants will choose a plot to call their own and simply care for that portion of the garden, growing what they like with the provided supplies and tools. Those with excess crops are invited to donate their vegetables to the local food pantry.
A Garden Clean-Up Day will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 25, giving families the chance to stake out their plots in the area near the library. Pizza and snacks will be available.
If you're interested in participating, contact Lauren at ldiener1253@gmail.com or 750-3720.
