Spring is here...almost!
Books Alive! participants from seasons past celebrate at a cast party.
Welcome spring (or at least the end of single-digit temperatures), and with it another season of great programming and events at the Wallkill Public Library!
The Books Alive! children's theater company kicks the season off with rehearsals starting Tuesday, March 24. This year, practices will take place at Ostrander Elementary from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
This season's show, once again produced and directed by Adrienne and Jim Perine, is a retrospective entitled It's All About the Books! Scenes and songs from previous shows will be highlighted, intermingled with new material and some surprises for the audience! Performances will be held May 30, with a Friends of the Library raffle drawing for an Apple iPad held at the 5 p.m. show.
A Toddler Story Timer helped bring spring to the library recently by planting a plastic flower outside our entrance.
Spring break is coming up and the library will be offering special activities all week long, beginning with:
March 30 - Join Miss Christine for an Egg & Stand Craft for ages 5 and up at 1 p.m.
April 1 - Miss Pat will offer Toddler Story Time at 10 and again at 11:15 a.m. Young at Heart Family Story Time will also be held that day from 3-5 p.m. Join us for stories, maker-space activities, and a preview of some of the plans coming up this summer!
April 2 - Ages 8 and up can learn needle art with their own Flower Bracelet Kit at 1 p.m. Minecraft Team Building sessions will be held later that day, as well - one from 3-4 p.m., and another from 4-5 p.m.
Don't forget to register for these programs online or at the library.
More plans are in the works, so stay tuned for additional details in future blasts!

Historic patent on display at local bank
Wallkill Public Library's archivist, Matthew Thorenz, stands beside the reproduction of the Barberie Patent, now on display at Wallkill Valley Federal Savings and Loan.

The Wallkill Public Library has loaned a reproduction of the historic Barberie Land Patent to Wallkill Valley Federal Savings and Loan.

The patent is, for all intents and purposes, Shawangunk's birth certificate, drawn up in 1709 when Peter Barberie was granted a 2,000-acre parcel of land by Queen Anne in exchange for fir and pine trees that would be used "to make masts for our Royal Navy."
The library has had possession of the patent since the mid-1930s. WPL archivist Matthew Thorenz was instrumental in creating a digital copy of the document and transferring the original to the Ulster County Archives in 2013.

Many thanks to bank president Mike Horodysky for graciously offering to display the reproduction of this important artifact!

Display celebrates fairy tale release
Cinderella comes out today in the theaters, and to mark the occasion Miss Carolyn - a princess in her own right - has created a special display featuring Cinderella stories from around the world, artwork, and even a glass slipper! Come see how many different versions of this popular fairy tale have been known throughout history (then go see the movie - it looks good!).
Friends of Library gear up for great spring
The Friends of the Wallkill Public Library  will be raffling off an Apple iPad to celebrate National Library Month in April. Tickets will be on sale at the library and through the Friends. The drawing will take place during the 5 p.m. Books Alive! performance on May 30.
The Friends meet next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, at the Friends' Used Book Shop. New members are needed to help plan fund-raising activities! Forms are available at the library.

You can help save millions for libraries!
Where else but the library can you get hit movies, bestselling books, educational programming, and so much more for free?
Congress is in the process of deciding which programs get funding this budget year and right now significant library monies could be on the chopping block.
