Library loses dear friend

At times, it seems, life coasts along. We live day to day, going through our routines, as it should be, but then "life happens." Something stops us in our tracks, makes us slow down and ponder all we have in our lives. All we are grateful for, the love and the blessings that exist in the privilege of just experiencing another day on this earth.

Carpe diem

On Tuesday morning, the memory of my friend and former longtime board trustee, Stewart Crowell, who passed away on February 3, 2014, was heavy on my mind. This has been the year of "the firsts," the first summer, the first holiday season, the first winter...without Stew and all the help, guidance, and just plain fun and levity he brought to daily life here at the library.

It was in the midst of pondering these moments that I learned another bright light had been snuffed out just the day before. Our friend and colleague, Anne Thompson, had lost her longtime, valiant battle with cancer.

Anne held a pottery workshop a couple of years ago that was a huge success.

Anne was a bubbly lover of life, full of fun and laughter who quite frankly had been dealt a bad hand in the health department. Although she struggled with several bouts of cancer, she fought hard because she was so strong and courageous and a sweet and kind woman. People like Anne are just good

folks, full of love and sparkle and warmth but bad stuff happens to them. When this happens, I always find myself wondering, What is it that this angel had been here to teach me? This coming year, I will think of this often. Somehow, it softens the blow, it feels respectful, it gives life meaning and purpose. Each precious breath.

When winter ends, and the earth softens up, I would like to plant a tree or a garden of lovely bright flowers on the library lawn. A place to go to remember the warm and sunny smile Anne had for all she came in touch with. Her love of the outdoors, her beautiful pottery, her family and friends, and her library. Thank you, Anne, for gracing our doorsteps. Safe travels and thank you for sharing your life with all of us. We will miss you.

A service to celebrate Anne's life will be held at noon Feb. 14 at the Wallkill Reformed Church. A reception will be held immediately following, for which donations such as sandwiches, finger foods, and desserts are being accepted. Call the church at 895-2181 for more information.
