Indies First draws Gaiman, wife to local book stores

Neil Gaiman and wife Amanda Palmer are giving readers another reason to shop local this weekend during their Indies First holiday initiative.

The bestselling writer and his rock star/author wife are taking advantage of Small Business Saturday to lead their fellow authors in a campaign to volunteer at independent booksellers tomorrow. The Gaimans will be appearing at The Golden Notebook in Woodstock, Oblong Books & Music's Rhinebeck location, and another New York store.

Indies First is a year-round campaign that supports independent book stores. Tomorrow's holiday initiative will see about 1,200 writers  signing books, greeting customers, and sometimes even working behind the counter at more than 400 independent shops around the country.

Not-so-indie Barnes & Noble is also attempting to lure customers into its stores today with signed copies of books by bestselling writers such as Donna Tartt, Dan Brown, E.L. James, Jeff Kinney, and about 96 others. Each signed about 5,000 copies of their latest books, which will be distributed among B&N's more than 650 stores. Happy Black Friday!

Hour of Code is almost upon us
Last year the Hour of Code introduced millions of students to an hour of introductory computer science, and the amazing thing is - they loved it!
Computer programming is not only an under-taught subject in most schools - it's also a lucrative career that's predicted to grow much faster than the amount of applicants qualified to fill its job openings.
This year the Wallkill Public Library is participating in the Hour of Code, providing ages 10 and up with the opportunity to learn basic programming skills while writing their own Angry Birds game. The program will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11. Space is limited, so sign up soon - either online or at the library.
All invited to Family Card-Making Party!
Last year's Card-Making Party drew a steady stream of crafters.
Adults and children of all ages will be able to craft their own special holiday greetings during the Dec. 10 Family Card-Making Party.
Get creative and make your holiday wishes extra special with your own homemade design. Door prizes and refreshments will also be offered. The event will be held in the community room of Town Hall, so everyone will have plenty of room to work on their projects!
RSVP by Dec. 8 by registering either online or at the library.
Robinson bringing animal pals in January
Wildlife lecturer Bill Robinson always draws a crowd during his library visits.
Animal lovers will be thrilled to know that uber-popular wildlife expert Bill Robinson will be returning for a visit on Jan. 17!
Join us at 1 p.m. that day in the community room of Town Hall as Bill shares his expertise on animals' adaptations for survival and the importance of local wildlife. Included in the presentation will be live hawks, owls, snakes, lizards, and more.
New StoryWalk coming in spring
Brenda Griffin's Girl Scout Troop 60226 has taken down their StoryWalk from the hamlet's rail trail.
The stakes for the next StoryWalk, which will be put up in the spring, will remain in the ground to save the girls some time and effort come the warmer weather. So if you're cross-country skiing the trail this winter and notice them, they do have a purpose.
StoryWalk is an initiative to build children's literacy by posting laminated pages of published children's stories along popular walking routes. Keep an eye out for the Girl Scouts' latest in a few months!
Tree-lighting ceremony set for Sunday
Holiday carols, kids' crafts, and a visit from Santa will be among the main events featured during Sunday's annual town tree-lighting ceremony.
The program begins at 4 p.m. at Shawangunk Town Hall.
A food drive for the local pantry will also be held during the ceremony, so any donations of non-perishables would be appreciated.
