Readers win during SRP
The crowd watches the show during Tuesday night's SRP kickoff. Let the reading begin!
The more you read, the more you win during this year's Summer Reading Program.
Both tickets for prizes and raffles as well as Paw Prints (that can be used at Ostrander and Leptondale's school stores in the fall) will be distributed based on each child's reading log during this year's program.
For every five books under 100 pages, children will receive one ticket and one Paw Print.
For bigger books, children will get two tickets and two Paw Prints per 100 pages.
Tickets can then be exchanged for either small prizes (displayed in the glass case downstairs) or raffle tickets that will be entered for bigger prizes at the end of the SRP (for an idea of what there is to win, check out the top of the bookshelves in the nonfiction room).
Reading logs are kept in the children's room in a file. Keep them updated and be sure to check for tickets in your folder! The logs must be handed in by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5. No more tickets will be distributed after that.
The year's top readers will be contacted by 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6.
Good luck to all!
SRP opener kicks summer into gear
A scienceteller wows the crowd with one of his experiments.
The heat and humidity were oppressive, but the more than 300 people who gathered on the library lawn for the SRP opener Tuesday evening didn't let it get them down!
Revelers of all ages came to enjoy the official start of the Summer Reading Program, which included a performance by the Sciencetellers, as well as food from the Boy Scouts, a bouncy house, a photo booth, and  more!
Thanks to all who attended, and of course to the many who helped! We couldn't do it without you!

Jeff Montanye's Digital Photography will teach participants the basics of taking a good picture, photography etiquette, and more. Each week kids will make a personal photo project of their work.
Attendees need their own digital camera and a memory card to start. The workshops will be offered each Monday from 1-2:30 p.m. through July.
Sleepover isn't just for Teddy Bears!
Is your stuffed animal in the mood for a slumber party?
Drop him off for the library's Teddy Bear Sleepover Friday, July 11. Stuffed animals of all kinds are invited at 4:30 p.m. to hear a special story time with their caretakers before being left for a night of fun.
Children can pick up their friends the following day at 11:30 a.m. A special performance by the Up Past Bedtime Band will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the library lawn - bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.!
New rules should make SRP run smoothly
This year the Wallkill Public Library is putting some new rules and regulations in place that will hopefully make the Summer Reading Program as organized and fair as possible.
Parents and caretakers should be aware that:
  • If you have signed up for a program and do not attend, we will call you. If you do not attend any other program for which you signed up after that, we will be moving you to those programs' waiting lists. This policy is put in place to give those on the waiting lists who will attend the programs a chance to participate.
  • When dropping off and picking up your child for any program, you MUST sign them in and out. This means we must see your face if you are leaving your child(ren) with us. If the person signing them in will not be the person signing them out, you must fill out a form with the name of the other parent or guardian who will be picking the child(ren) up. Children will only be allowed leave with the parent/guardian who dropped them off, or a person with a form that has been given out by our library and signed by one of our staff.
  • Finally, if your child is staying for a program that's 90 minutes or longer, it is recommended that they bring a small snack and a water bottle. Though a snack break will be taken during these programs, the library may or may not provide refreshments, and those with allergies should make sure they have something safe to enjoy!
VOW needs your help designing a logo
Do you have a flair for art and a way with words? Your work could appear on a new logo that will be seen all around the hamlet and beyond!
The community improvement group Vision of Wallkill is holding a contest for a new logo - if your design wins, you do, too! The prize is a $25 Amazon gift card.
The group's logo will be used for everything from letterhead to banners, buttons, and t-shirts.
The contest rules and terms include:
  • Logo must display both an eagle and the town bridge
  • It can be sketched or created from images on a computer, but must be able to be clearly reproduced
  • It can be in black and white or color
  • Entries can be dropped off at either the Wallkill Senior High School office or the Wallkill Public Library by July 7.
