This library's open 24/7!
Wallkill Public Library Director Mary Lou Carolan and Boy Scout Douglas Richardson officially open the hamlet's new book exchange on Thursday.
There's a new library in town.

Well, actually, it's a book exchange, but its official title is "The Little Free Library," a place where residents and visitors can share their love of literature for free by choosing a book from the collection in the exchange box and contributing some of their own favorites.

Douglas Richardson, 15, came up with the idea to put the box (which resembles a British phone booth) on the lawn of the Wallkill Public Library while trying to decide on an Eagle Scout project. He and his Boy Scout Troop 76 worked most of last  Saturday setting up the exchange as well as the new benches and birdhouses Doug, his father John, and Assistant Scoutmaster Wayne Dailey built.

Now Wallkill's new book exchange will be registered on the world map of Little Free Libraries located at littlefreelibrary.org.

If you want to visit the Little Free Library yourself, or Boy Scout Troop 76, for that matter, the July 1 Summer Reading Program kickoff at the Wallkill Public Library will be the perfect opportunity! The scouts will be there barbecuing and providing other treats for the occasion, and the Sciencetellers will be performing at 6:30 p.m.

Placemakers meet Tuesday at Elsie's
The Vision of Wallkill placemaking group had their first meeting just a few months ago, but already they're making huge strides in their efforts to make the hamlet a better place in which to live, work, and visit.
VOW's  latest plans include the creation of a River Walk. They're also sponsoring a summer concert series and preparing for the family entertainment-filled Weekend of Wallkill Sept. 26-28.
The group can always use more members interested in beautifying and improving Wallkill. If you'd like to join or find out more about VOW, you can attend their next meeting Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m. at Elsie's Restaurant. Or contact Mary Lou at 895-3707 or mlcarolan@rcls.org.
Guest authors to speak at book club
Local author Carol Goodman will be at Tuesday evening's Fiction Club meeting at the library to discuss her book, The Seduction of Water.
A member of the adjunct faculty at SUNY New Paltz, Carol's other books include The Blythewood Tales, The Lake of Dead Languages, and Arcadia Falls. The Seduction of Water, her second novel, won the Hammett Prize in 2003. Her books have also been nominated for the IMPAC award twice, the Simon & Schuster/Mary Higgins Clark award, and the Nero Wolfe Award.
Next month, the club will welcome back popular author Lynn Austin for her second visit to the group. Stay tuned for details!

Fictional mag shines light on Newsweek
Though Michael Hastings' first work of fiction didn't make it to a publisher before the 33-year-old was killed in a car accident last year, the novel was rescued from the journalist's laptop.
Lucky for us readers - The Last Magazine is a revealing profile of life at a news weekly in the dying days of print media.
It's also a scathing peek at the complicity of the media in the war in Iraq.
The Last Magazine is a thinly veiled portrait of Newsweek, where Hastings worked as an intern in 2002-3. The book's main character (also named Michael Hastings) is a recent college grad whose chosen trade is almost obsolete, unable to compete in a market where amateur bloggers are fast outnumbering professional journalists.
News addicts will easily recognize former Newsweek editors Fareed Zakaria and Jon Meacham in the book, despite their fictional masks, and this awareness will undoubtedly make Hastings' cringe-worthy descriptions more enjoyable, but is not a prerequisite to appreciating the novel.
Media fans or no, readers will love Hastings' novel, which is available now at the Wallkill Public Library.
