Great win for library, area
Wallkill Public Library was one of  20 libraries nationwide to be chosen for a collaborative funding opportunity called Outside the Box, winning a $5,000 grant!
Outside the Box is an initiative that empowers neighborhood leaders to create unique public entertainment experiences that bring people together and strengthen their communities. It's a collaboration between Redbox, OCLC (a worldwide library cooperative), and the Project for Public Spaces. All three see libraries as centers of community life.
The money will be put toward reusable materials that are needed for the VOW-sponsored Weekend of Wallkill, a series of family-friendly events in five downtown locations from Friday to Sunday, Sept. 26-28. Among the plans for that weekend are the Harvest Faire, outdoor movies, a photo contest, barbecue, and the unveiling of the new River Walk.
After attending the PPS Placemaking Leadership Council in April 2013, library director Mary Lou Carolan (who wrote the grant) launched the Vision of Wallkill, a grassroots organization whose members are committed to creating positive change in the hamlet.
VOW's next meeting is from 7- 9 p.m. June 24, at Elsie's Restaurant. All are invited to attend - it's the input of community members and businesspeople that is so vital to the group's success.
Stay tuned for more details about the Weekend of Wallkill in future newsletters and on the library website!

Contest winners get art/photos displayed!
Are you an amateur photographer or artist whose work is begging to be seen by the public? This may be your chance!
The Vision of Wallkill is sponsoring a photography/art contest to promote the hamlet. Photographs, drawings, and paintings are being accepted from participants of any age. The objects of the artworks/photos must be something the artist sees while standing within the boundaries of the town of Shawangunk. Judging categories will be divided by age and subject (Landscape and Nature, Animals, and People). The entry fee is $5 per piece, and the deadline for all entries is Aug. 30.
Winners will have their work displayed during the Beauty of Wallkill Art Contest showing on Sept. 27, in the Town Hall. Winning entries will also be displayed at the library, Town Hall, or both for the month following the showing.
For complete rules and entry forms, visit the Wallkill Public Library's website or stop by the circulation desk the next time you're visiting!
