Snow doesn't keep birdwatchers away
Last Saturday's snow showers didn't keep scores of nature fans from showing up for Bill Robinson's Birds of Prey and Reptiles presentation.
Audience members oohed, aahed, and - in some cases - ewwwed during the hour-long show, as the wildlife expert brought out his live exhibits. Children and adults alike watched in awe as a falcon, owl, alligator, snake, and more were lured out of their traveling cases, sometimes with the help of (what's to them) tasty morsels like dead rodents.
Hopefully Bill will be back to visit us soon - his shows are always a hit!

Reception kicks off annual art show
Two of the items on display during last year's art show.
The Wallkill Woman's Club is teaming up with the Wallkill Public Library to present an exhibit and reception for the Wallkill Senior High School Student Art Show.
The reception will be held Monday, Feb. 10, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the library.
The annual exhibit is an opportunity to showcase the work of the creative and talented local students at the high school. The pieces will remain on display at the library for a month.
All are invited to attend the show! Refreshments will be served.

The following is a letter from Robert Hubsher, executive director of the Ramapo Catskill Library System of which Wallkill and 46 other libraries are a part:

Good afternoon all,

As many of you already know, Governor Cuomo released his 2014-2015 executive budget on Tuesday, January 21.  We were shocked and disappointed to find that he had reduced state aid to library systems and libraries by $4 million compared to last year (a reduction of 4.7 percent). This cut represents a loss of $83,944 for the Ramapo Catskill Library System.
The governor's action breaks a years-old precedent of retaining,
in the new executive budget, the amount added by the legislature in the previous year.  This is particularly difficult to understand when the governor has increased education funding by 3.8 percent over last year.
State aid to library systems and libraries has been below the level of funding outlined in education law since 2008. Over the previous three years we experienced very modest increases in funding, bringing us to a level that is still 15 percent below the amount received in 2007. This action by the governor would increase this shortfall to 20 percent.
Please take the time to let the governor know that you want him to restore the funding for libraries and library systems to the same level as last year.
You can do so very easily by visiting the New York Library Association (NYLA) Legislative Action Center  and then clicking on the Take Action button.
We need your support to get the governor's attention and to move him toward action - let's work together to get the governor to restore state aid to library systems and libraries to last year's level.
Below is a link to a revised version of the letter to the governor. You can download a copy of this letter and paste the text into the form on the NYLA Legislative Action Center web page.  This version provides a local flavor to the content with specific reference to the impact of the cut on RCLS. You can also add your own comments to the revised version I have created or the version available on the NYLA Legislative Action Center web page.
