Puppets visit Story Time
Wednesday was the last day of Story Time for the season, and the event was marked with a puppet show by Mountain Laurel Waldorf School.
Almost 50 people showed up for the program, which featured a harpist as well as the school's unique puppets, whose performance taught little ones the value of working together as a team.
Renowned for their creativity and free-thinking, the Mountain Laurel School's goal is to bring out each child's creative potential.
The school's Annual Winter Faire will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8. Crafters, food, and outdoor activities will highlight the event, which will feature an outdoor craft marketplace, Star Penny Puppetry, gift and wreath making, children's games, music, great food, and more.
The school will also have an open house from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 25. For more information on that or the Winter Faire, call Mountain Laurel at 255-0033.

Black-Haired Girl's good people watching
Death of the Black-Haired Girl is written by a writers' writer - a guy named Robert Stone who, despite his National Book Award and two-time finalist spot for the Pulitzer - is relatively unknown among those who aren't English professors.
More's the pity for the readers who've thus far missed out on his work, but take heart - he's back, and his latest novel - a crime thriller - is supposed to be among his best yet.
Its strength, according to NPR's Rosecrans Baldwin, lies in its characters and the reader's voyeuristic view of them, complete with foibles, irrationality, and sometimes just "plain old human evil."
Death of a Black-Haired Girl is available now at the Wallkill Public Library.

A sad farewell to Junie B. Jones.....
Barbara Park, whose Junie B. Jones series was as controversial (among some) as it was wildly popular, died last week after a long battle with cancer.
Junie B. Jones was one of the most banned and challenged books in the past decade. Some objected to the character's poor grammar and troublemaking. But scores more adored the series about the quirky kindergartener, which sold 55 million copies in North America alone and spent 180 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
Park herself once said she didn't feel a book's value was dependent on characters serving as role models:
"Personally, I happen to think that a book is of extraordinary value if it gives the reader nothing more than a smile or two. In fact, I happen to think that's huge," she said.
Park was 66.
