Story Time more than fun
Children and adults alike are enthralled with this year's Halloween Story Time.
This season's Story Time is drawing to a close (Nov. 20 is the last day of this session). But the program will be back in January and there are plenty of reasons why you and your little ones may want to take advantage of it!
Library Story Times:
  • encourage a love of reading
  • increase vocabulary
  • improve attention span
  • sharpen listening skills
  • build social skills (a benefit which may come in particularly handy for only children)
But children do more at Story Time than just listen to Miss Carolyn read to them (though that alone is reason enough to attend). The crafts they enjoy after the story have been shown to:
  • stimulate creativity and imagination
  • improve dexterity and coordination
  • boost self-esteem (because the children are so proud of their projects!)
  • build on a child's ability to follow directions

Once again in January, the library will offer a variety of Story Times for all ages, including Mommy and Me, Toddler Story Time, and Book Buddies. Call us for more information - 895-3707.

Coming up at the Wallkill Public Library

Books Alive! actress on stage tonight!
Tonight's the night - Jillian Landsman, a Books Alive! children's theater company alumna, will be among the talent showcased in 90 Miles Off Broadway's production of David and Lisa.
The play centers around two mentally disturbed adolescents and their time at Berkeley School. It will be performed at the Reformed Church of New Paltz tonight, tomorrow, and Nov. 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m., and on Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors, students, and advance sales, and $10 for members and groups. They're available at the door, or by calling Kim at Bright Beginnings at 256-9657.
The show's adult themes, language, and one violent scene may make it inappropriate for certain age groups - parents should use their discretion.
Jillian has the role of Sandra in the play, but she won't be the only local talent on the stage...her mother, Marla - who former Story Timers might remember as Miss Marla - has been cast in the play, as well! She'll be playing the Secretary and Mother of Girl.
We wish the both of them luck!

  ACA informational sessions held
Still puzzled about the Affordable Care Act?
The Wallkill Public Library is teaming up with Walden's Josephine-Louise Public Library to offer an informational presentation at 7 p.m. Nov. 13, in the community room of the Walden library.
Learn from a specialist about eligibility for the different forms of health coverage now available as well as how to navigate the system. A Q&A session will also be included in the program.
For those who want to do some research of their own,  the Middletown Thrall Library has compiled a library guide with helpful sites. You can also call  specific agencies to set up an appointment with a navigator who will be able to tell you about your options.

Food for Fines week starts Monday!
The library's annual Thanksgiving food drive kicks off Monday!
That's when patrons can eliminate some or all of their fines by bringing in food items to the circulation desk. For every one item donated, one fine will be waived. Though the deal does not apply to lost or damaged items, the number of fines that can be erased is limitless.
Donations will be used to fill the local food pantry's Thanksgiving baskets. Items needed include:
  • stuffing mix
  • instant potatoes
  • cookies
  • dinner rolls
  • juice
  • canned sweet potatoes
  • canned vegetables
  • turkey gravy
Donations will be taken at the circulation desk through Nov. 16. Thanks to all who participate!

Stay tuned for Snowman Snowday......
Ready for the snow?
The Wallkill Public Library is (although we don't know when it's coming)...
This season, the library is planning to gather family and friends for some fun on the library lawn during Snowman Snowday. All we need is the first significant snowfall of the season, then we'll announced the event via email, Facebook, and on our website.
Join us that day to build a snowman, play games, and drink hot chocolate. If the weather's so bad that you can't make it, stay home and take a picture of your own snowman, then send us a copy - your snow sculpture might be featured on our website or Facebook page!
It's at least one reason to look forward to the winter weather!
Take your choice of crafty programs
Patrons will have their pick of creative programming Nov. 20.
Those who are handy with a needle and thread will enjoy the first part of Smocking with Susan at 6:30 p.m. Smocking is the technique of gathering fabric to make it stretch - you can learn how to do it and make your own Christmas ornament in the process during this adult program. Kits are $5 and must be paid for in advance. The second part of the program will be offered Dec. 4.
A Family Card-Making Party will also be taking place at 6:30 p.m. that night. Meet in the community room of Town Hall for some refreshments and create your own cards! Registration is required by Nov. 18.
The Quilters' Circle also meets at 6:30 p.m. that night in a different section of the community room.
Call the library to register for the Smocking or Card-Making Party, or for more information - 895-3707.
