Let the library help you!
If the Dysfunction Junction that's Washington gets its act together before totally derailing the economy, the good news is that the job market seems to be gaining strength, especially in certain sectors like MBA hirings.
The other good news is that even if you're not MBA-material, the right skill set (and attitude!) can put you on the path for success at whatever field you're interested in pursuing.
The Wallkill Public Library can help you with this! Not only do we provide a steady supply of job resources both online and at the library itself, we're offering special career help training and workshops in the beginning of November!
The library has teamed up with Ulster County Office of Employment and Training and ULSTER WORKS OneStop Career Center to provide these FREE consultations and programming, which will include:

Job Consultations - By appointment only, Nov. 7
Online Job Search - 10 a.m. Nov. 8
Resume Writing - 11:30 a.m. Nov. 8
Interviewing Skills - 1:45 p.m. Nov. 8

You'll work with experienced employment counselors who will coach you in the direction you want to go.
Funded in part by the New York State Library's Adult Literacy Library Services Grant program, Career Help at Wallkill is sponsored by RCLS. Call 895-3707 for more information, or to make a Nov. 7 employment!

New magazine offers ideas for makers
If you're a DIY-type, or a DIWO (Do It With Others), you're going to love the library's newest addition to our periodical collection, Make Magazine.
Make features projects that involve computers, electronics, robotics, metalworking, woodworking, and more. Geared toward those who enjoy making things, the complex projects the magazine features can often be completed with the use of cheap materials, such as household items.
Volume 35 of the magazine is on our shelves, now - you can take a peek at the next volume using the link above. Enjoy!
Reading may teach certain social skills
Shy, gawky, and socially inept - does this describe your average, bespectacled reader?
Not according to a study published recently in the journal Science, which showed book lovers may possess more social graces than most - depending on what books they're reading.
It's literary fiction that seems to feed the human capacity for empathy, as it turns out (sorry, E L James).
The study showed that those who read literary fiction, vs. popular fiction or nonfiction, performed better on tests that measured empathy, social perception, and emotional intelligence.
Researchers speculate that what makes literary fiction more of a compassion-enhancer is that it leaves more to the imagination, forcing readers to become attuned to social nuances as they make their own inferences about the characters in those stories.
So read on, connoisseurs of fine lit! We might not be as geeky as we feared.
Got a research paper due? Stop in!
Monday is Columbus Day, and though school's closed, the library's open!
For many students, now's the time of year when those first in-depth writing projects, like research papers, are assigned.
Whether this is your child's first-ever paper or his 51st, you can count on the library for your one-stop shop for resources!
No matter what an assignment requires - nonfiction books, documentaries on DVD, or computer databases - students can get a jumpstart on it with the library's help.
Don't forget about our Wednesday Homework Labs, either, where from 3:30-5:30 p.m. students can meet and use the computers, make copies, do research, and receive tutoring! To request some one-on-one tutoring of your own, contact Paulette at 895-3707 or psnyder@rlcs.org.
