The Doctor is in (on Tuesday)....

Dr. Sleep, by Stephen King

Can America's best-known horror novelist top himself?
Readers will find out this week, when Dr. Sleep, the sequel to what many consider Stephen King's scariest work, is released.
Though King has been sober for 25 years, he was reportedly so soused when he wrote The Shining back in 1977, he had to hire an assistant to check the references to his own work while writing Sleep.
The novel revisits Danny Torrance, all grown up and waging his own battle with the bottle, as well as with spirits of a different sort....
Though King's written more than 50 novels and invented countless characters in the process, he's said that it was Danny alone who "interested [him] enough" to warrant a sequel.
And though over the years King has fine-tuned his considerable talent, taking a step back from his readers' startle reflex now and again to explore more subtle avenues of creepiness, or just to tell a great story, his fan base knows one thing they can always expect from King is excellent writing (even, apparently, when he's tanked!).
Judging by the reviews, Doctor Sleep delivers both the fear factor and the quality writing that have made King the world's best-selling horror novelist.
We can't wait to find out for ourselves! You can pick up King's latest at the Wallkill Public Library starting Tuesday.

New DVD television collections available
null Sure, there's lots of quality television out there. But if you're ready for a break from Here Comes Honey Boo Boo or Swamp Loggers, the Wallkill Public Library has some other options.
New to our DVD collection are some additions from the small screen, including
Seasons 1 and 2 of Lost. Catch the beginning of this groundbreaking 2004-2010 series whose critical and popular success has earned it droves of imitators (Terra Nova, The Event), all of whom have crashed and burned. For those who never saw the show, you must. For those who have, watch closely, this time, and see if you can figure out if all the questions you accumulated as the seasons progressed were answered in the end.
Other television series new to our shelves include Seinfeld, Charmed, and Family Guy.

Study shows people online want privacy
null
A new survey finds that though most people prefer anonymity when they're online, many think such privacy is impossible.
Released by the Pew Research Center, the study finds that 86 percent of Internet users have taken steps to remove or mask their digital footprints and 55 percent have made attempts to avoid observation by specific people, groups, or the government. Despite these efforts, 21 percent of Internet users have had their email or social networking account compromised, 12 percent have been stalked or harassed online, and 11 percent have had personal information (such as their Social Security or credit card numbers) stolen.
Patrons who take advantage of the public access computers at Wallkill Public Library should be aware that a number of steps are taken to ensure their privacy. If you have questions about this or any other matter, don't hesitate to call us at 895-3707.
