Wallkill Public Library
SRP finale next week!

This coming week - unbelievably - marks the end of another awesome Summer Reading Program, and Animal Embassy will be here during Thursday's finale to help us celebrate the impressive accomplishments of our youngest readers!
Join us in the community room of Town Hall from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Thursday, and you'll get the opportunity to see exotic burrowing animals up close. Live animal visits, wildlife artifacts, digital slide shows and interactive presentations will highlight the performance.
An ice cream social will follow on the front lawn of the library.
This season's Top Readers will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, as well, during a special reception. Those who made the cut will be notified the day before.
Book logs should be handed in by 8 p.m. Tuesday. This will be the last chance for readers to get raffle tickets and paw prints!
Raffles for the special SRP prizes will be privately drawn here at the library by the staff, and winners will be notified by phone to pick up their prizes. (We're hoping that by doing this the "out of sight, out of mind" way, those who don't win (and their parents!) will be spared the tears and gnashing of teeth that's been known to accompany public drawings.)
Last year, SRP participants read more than 3,000 books - you can help us make or break that record this summer! Good luck to all!

Raffle offered for Quilters' creation
The Wallkill Public Library Quilters' Circle is raffling off the beautiful quilt you may have noticed hanging in the main entryway of the library.
The members of the Quilters' Circle made the quilt themselves, cutting out hundreds of two-inch squares of various prints over the winter. They then sewed the squares together - both by hand and machine -  during Textile Tuesdays and monthly meetings over the course of several months.
Proceeds from the raffle will be split between the library (for programming), Town Hall (as a thank you for the use of their community room), and the Quilters' Circle, who will use the money to purchase supplies for other community projects.
Raffle tickets are now available for $1 each or $5 for six. The drawing will be held Sept. 21.
The group just completed another quilt, to be raffled off by Wallkill High School's football team. Go, Panthers!
Nature lovers set for one last trek
The Muddy Boots Club will be going on their third and final outing Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10:30 a.m.
This time the group will learn how to identify trees, shrubs, and wildflowers along River Road in the hamlet. They'll meet on the library lawn for their walk along the river, where they'll study plant identifications, tree families, ecological succession, and invasive plants.
There's still some space left for this if anyone is interested! Call the library at 895-3707 for more information.

Open Story Time, play offered for all
An open Story Time will be offered for all ages at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Following the Story Time, Act It Out Theater Workshop will perform the Skippyjon Jones story, Mummy Trouble, in the community room of Town Hall. Story Timers are welcome to enjoy the play (adapted from the Judy Schachner book by Toni Buzzeo) and stick around for the refreshments to follow.
Actors should arrive between 10:15 and (no later than) 10:30 in the community room to set up and practice one last time.

Harvest Faire vendors being sought now
It's hard to believe it's the second day of August, and  it's going to be even harder to believe when fall rolls around, but it's coming fast!
And that means so is the Harvest Faire! The annual event put on by the Friends of the Wallkill Public Library will be held Sept. 21 this year, rain or shine, and space is available now for vendors of all types!
This year, spaces will not be assigned, but will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in reserving a spot for themselves can get a copy of the vendor application here.
Whether you're looking for the perfect garage sale venue, a place to display and sell your crafts or artwork, or you're a local entrepreneur who wants to use the Faire to advertise your business, you'll want to be a part of this year's event!
Food vendors should contact the Ulster County Department of Health at 340-3010 for a temporary food permit.
Questions? Call the library at 895-3707.

Library director featured in interview
Wallkill Public Library director Mary Lou Carolan was recently featured in an online interview by the Project for Public Spaces.
The PPS is is a nonprofit planning, design, and educational organization dedicated to helping people create and sustain public spaces that build stronger communities.
Mary Lou recently became an inaugural member of the Placemaking Leadership Council and attended their meeting in Detroit. Following the meeting, she was inspired to make the library's front lawn more open and inviting in an effort to draw more people into the library and build community. Read what she has to say about her efforts, community, and placemaking here!

Wimpy Kid fans, mark your calendars!
In honor of the Nov. 5 release of the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book (number 8!), you can visit the official website of the series and ask any question you want about the upcoming book (or anything else) by typing in your queries and shaking the site's crystal ball.
The answers to your questions aren't the only thing being revealed on the site - the cover for the new book will be unveiled on Aug. 8! Keep an eye out for what's sure to be a hot item for the holidays!

Don't run out of book ideas for your kids
Just because the SRP is almost over, doesn't mean your kids should stop reading! On the contrary, with a month left until school starts, now's the time to warm them up to the pleasures of a good book (and in doing so, sharpen their skills), before they go back to having to read ones they might not be so crazy about in the fall.
Book recommendation sites abound for readers of all ages, but one particularly good one for kids is James Patterson's ReadKiddoRead.com.  As a father, Patterson understands the trickiness that can be involved in getting reluctant readers to pick up a book, and knows that half the battle is finding one they'll not only pick up but won't want to put down.
His site divvies up the book recommendations by age and category, so users can zero in on exactly what they're looking for without sorting through lists that are irrelevant to them.
The site also includes lesson plans for educators, contests that offer free books, and articles and tips on getting your kids to read.

Peg Wilson really loves her library!
And she also loves mysteries, which is why one of our favorite staff members entered Wallkill Public Library in Sisters In Crime's We Love Libraries Lottery.
A grant of $1,000 will be awarded to the winner drawn from entries submitted to the networking/advice site for mystery authors. To compete, Peg had to fill in an entry form and upload a photo of herself with books in Wallkill's collection by Sisters in Crime members.
Good luck to Peg (and to us!). If her name is pulled, we'll be sure to share the announcement.
