Book describes life as Edwardian servant Life Below Stairs: True Lives of Edwardian Servants, by Alison Maloney For those who can't get enough of the PBS hit Downton Abbey - whose third season kicks off Jan. 6 - Alison Maloney's account of what life was really like for those who lived and toiled below the stairs of Edwardian homes is a good companion piece. Detailing everything from household structure, pay and conditions, special duties, perks, and even romance, Maloney examines the drudgery and hardships of downstairs, as well as the rewards and pleasures. Thoroughly researched and reliably informed, the book also contains firsthand stories from the staff of the time, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the lifestyle and conduct of a bygone era. |
Online tutor helps more than students
Another great resource Wallkill Public Library patrons can access through our online InfoPortal includes Tutor.com.
The comprehensive site offers one-on-one instruction between 3 p.m. and midnight each day, as well as study, test prep, and career resources users can access whenever they want.
The resource library section of the site contains worksheets, flashcards, sample tests, helpful websites, local job openings, resume templates, and more.
As usual, all Wallkill patrons need to access the site is their library card number. It's a less costly solution for the struggling student (and/or parent). |
