Season 8 of the library's children's theater project, Books Alive!, will soon be underway, and this year the works of two beloved authors will be featured for the show! Mo Willems' We Are in a Book, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Elephants Can't Dance, and The Duckling Gets a Cookie, and Maurice Sendak's The Sign on Rosie's Door, will be the focus of the performance, with original music based on the stories. Once again, Adrienne Gelfand-Perine and Jim Perine will take the

helm directing the project, with Barbara Ganin composing the show's original music. Ages 8 through 10 will rehearse Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Ages 11 through 13 will practice Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Rehearsals begin Jan. 8. Informational sessions on the upcoming season will be held for performers and their parents on Dec. 11 at the library. The two sessions offered that night will be at 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. (attendees can choose whichever time is most convenient for them). Books Alive! began in 2005 as a creative outlet for local children to experience literacy in a new way, bringing stories to life using drama, music, and dance. Headed up by then-children's coordinator Mary Lou Carolan, the program was taken over by Adrienne and Jim once Mary Lou became library director. The program, which has had a steady group of about 25 participants each year, was nominated for the Ramapo Catskill Library System's Member Library Youth Program of the Year Award this year. |

Celebrate Las Posadas with the library!
Learn about (and celebrate!) the Mexican festival of Las Posadas Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 4 p.m.
Though the holiday originated in Spain, it's been an annual celebration throughout Mexico for more than 400 years, commemorating the arduous journey made by Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem and their struggle to find lodging along the way.
You can enjoy the tradition at the library as we listen to the Las Posadas story, as retold by Tomie dePaola, create poinsettia decorations, and partake in refreshments and treats!
Registration is required for this family event. |

Newburgh's branch featured in Record Sunday Times Herald-Record readers might have seen the story on the Newburgh Free Library's town branch location inside the Newburgh Mall last weekend.
According to the article, the mall location is a hit, garnering about 10 new cardholders a day within the first few months of its opening this past summer.
The library's popularity makes evident the void bookstores leave when they flee the malls. One attraction the Newburgh town branch has over bookstores, however, is its pricing - readers will be hard-pressed to do better!
If you're already a member of an RCLS library (like Wallkill), you, too, can benefit from Newburgh's pioneering accessibility the next time you're in the Newburgh Mall! |

Oprah's second book club pick a debut Oprah's second pick for her Book Club 2.0 is Ayana Mathis's The Twelve Tribes of Hattie. The debut novel traces one family's journey through the decades following the Great Migration (which saw, between 1916 and 1970, more than 6 million African Americans relocate from the rural South to the cities of the North, Midwest and West). The book was released Thursday. Oprah's first Book Club 2.0 pick, Cheryl Strayed's hugely successful Wild, is being adapted for the big screen by writer Nick Hornby (About a Boy, High Fidelity). |

Picoult drums up another sticky dilemma Storyteller, by Jodi Picoult
Sage Singer becomes friends with an old man who's particularly beloved in her community after they strike up a conversation at the bakery where she works. Josef Weber is everyone's favorite retired teacher and Little League coach. One day he asks Sage for a favor: to kill him. Shocked, Sage refuses...but then he tells her he deserves to die.
Once he reveals his secret, Sage wonders if he's right. What do you do when evil lives next door? Can someone who's committed a truly heinous act ever redeem themselves with good behavior? Should you offer forgiveness to someone if you aren't the party who was wronged? And most of all - if Sage even considers his request - is it murder, or justice? |
