Soggy start doesn't put damper on SRP kickoff
|
The weather was dicey, with a downpour drenching the lawn (and those trying to set up tents) at the very last minute, but that didn't stop the Summer Reading Program Kickoff from drawing another big crowd! A whopping 250 people showed up Tuesday evening, despite the lingering dark clouds and hair-flattening humidity, to enjoy this year's SRP opener. Droves of kids headed straight for the bouncy house, while others preferred to stop at the face-painting tables or to just run around with their friends. Sammie and Tudie were the night's performers, and the crowd got to kick back and enjoy ice cream from Chilly Willy and barbecue from the Boy Scouts as they watched the show. The event wouldn't have happened if not for the help and support of a number of special friends. The library would like to extend heartfelt thanks to:
- The Friends of the Wallkill Public Library, for paying for the performers and the bouncy house
- Rich Masterson, for the tent
- Ed Fitzgerald of Fun Factor Inflatables, for the ever-popular bouncy house
- The Wallkill Woman's Club, for their generous donation
- The Boy Scouts
- Beekeeper Tom Hutt
- Our awesome teen volunteers
- Julie Craner, for her face-painting
- Supporters of Music Education
- Cheri O'Hare and Musikgarten
- Len Adams, for donating money for Legos to be used as prizes during the SRP
- Walter Haecker of Green Meadows Landscaping and Lawn Care, for his help with the butterfly garden
- Dominick Colandrea, for his guitar expertise
- Stewart and Carolyn Crowell, for bringing the Farm Market to us
-
Sammie and Tudie, for sticking around after their performance to hobnob with their young fans
And thanks most of all to everyone who participated!! We hope you enjoy our upcoming programs and have a great time reading! |

This summer, readers get Paw Points!
This year, the Wallkill Public Library is teaming up with Ostrander Elementary to offer our Summer Reading Program participants a special prize! Paw Points will be given out to Ostrander readers, who can save them up and use them in the fall once they return to school. For every five books under 100 pages, readers earn one Paw Point. For every book over 100 pages, readers will get two Paw Points. In addition, readers will receive raffle tickets as a reward for their efforts. For every five books under 100 pages, one raffle ticket will be given out. For each book over 100 pages, the reward will be two raffles for each 100 pages read. Hopefully many SRP participants will discover that reading is a lifelong reward unto itself (but if they still need incentives, they won't be disappointed)! Though there won't be a prize case this year, surprises will be given out during story times, and the raffles will be for larger prizes like movie tickets, books, games, and more.

Many Summer Reading programs filled
Though most programs and events for the Summer Reading Program are completely full (including the waiting lists), there's hope left for those who have yet to register. There are still five spots (plus waiting list spaces) remaining in Archaeology Camp, which begins July 8, the Scriptwriting Workshop, which starts July 22, and the July 23 Paper Bowl Workshop. Beginner and Advanced Guitar Lessons also have room for more participants. Though classes started last night, the instructor will extend them for a week for anyone who would like to start next Thursday, so that those people will get the full six weeks of lessons. Painting for Relaxation, a beginner class for ages 14 and up, has space available in their Wednesday morning sessions. Story Times still have some spots open for the little ones, but all other Book Clubs are full. (And Book Club members please note - you're welcome to order books from other libraries so that you're set for upcoming meetings, should the books you want be unavailable at Wallkill.) There are also great shows and events you can catch during this year's SRP, including Fun with Energy with Jeff Boyer July 10 and Animal Embassy Aug. 8. Remember also that if you're interested in attending a program that's already filled, you can always call the library at 895-3707 the day of the event and check for cancellations. Be sure to sign up for this year's Summer Reading Program if you've yet to do so - the more you read, the greater your chances of winning great prizes!

Farm Market opens for season tomorrow
Tomorrow the Community Farm Market will kick off another summer season by offering fresh produce and more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday. Don't drive all the way to the supermarket for pricey vegetables shipped in from out of state (or country) - walk over to the corner of Main Street and Park Avenue near the Friends' Used Book Shop and select homegrown fruit and veggies, as well as bread, eggs, cheese, and more. And don't forget to Grow an Extra Row and help feed the hungry throughout our area. Drop off your surplus vegetables or flowers to the Market every Saturday around 9:30 a.m., and the profits from those sales will go towards food for underprivileged youth and the local food pantry.
