What is KCHIP?

The Kentucky Children's Health Insurance Program (KCHIP) is free or low-cost health insurance for children. KCHIP is for children younger than 19 who do not have health insurance and whose family income is less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

We know your children's health is important to you, but you may be facing barriers, like cost or lack of access to coverage through your employer, that prevent the purchase of health insurance. Whatever the reason might be, your family may qualify for coverage through KCHIP.

Children need health insurance. If you

think your children may qualify, apply today.  Questions call Becky Darnell, YSC Coordinator at 859.957.0042 or go to  http://www.kidshealth.ky.gov/en/ for more information.

Before You Hit the Stores on Black Friday!

Again this year, the National Junior Honor Society, through the generosity of our Turkey Foot community, will make a difference in the lives of a family in need during the holiday season.  Our Adopt-a-Family project will benefit a family who has faced tremendous challenges this year as their four-year old preschooler battles leukemia.  Little Savannah was diagnosed in March 2012 and has been receiving treatments ever since.  Though she is currently in remission, she continues maintenance chemotherapy at Children's Hospital until next June.  Needless to say, this year has been a struggle for Savannah, her parents, and her one and a half year old sister, Jasmin and financial resources are stretched to the limit.

The members of NJHS are asking you to help!  As you shop for the holidays, consider picking up something extra for our family.  You can also donate gift cards or donate by personal check (made payable to TFMS NJHS).  Our members will begin collections in all homerooms on Wednesday, November 28 and continue through Tuesday, December 18.  All gifts will be sorted and wrapped by our members and delivered to our family on December 21.

Simply send your donation in with your child.  Each day during homeroom, our members will be around to collect any items donated.  If you wish, you can bring an item or envelope to the front office and make it to the attention of NJHS / Ms. Dulaney.

Here are some specific ideas for gifts, though anything age and size appropriate will be appreciated (any excess or duplicate items will be donated to another local charity that helps families in need):

Savannah - age 4

·        Likes Monster High items, Barbie items (Barbie car, Barbie dolls, Barbie accessories), fairy/princess items, books, needs purple garbage can for her room.

·        Wears 5T:  primarily needs long sleeve shirts and pants

Jasmin - age 1 ½

·        Likes Sponge Bob items, board books, anything age appropriate.

·        Wears 3T-primarily needs long sleeve shirt and pants.  Needs shoes-size 9 (flat and easy to walk in as she is walking).

Parents - Gift cards to Walmart; gas gift cards are great since they drive to and from appointments at Children's Hospital.

NJHS - Wrapping paper, bows, tape so we can make the gifts festive!

The members if NJHS thank you in advance

for your generosity in this season of giving!

Weather Decisions in the Kenton County School District

1.    When our local weather authorities begin discussing the possibility of flurries, the transportation department begins gathering and reviewing information from various sources (weather stations, NOAA forecasts, State trooper road reports, etc...).  Staff members also drive the various area roads across the county to assess the conditions first-hand.  These processes increase our chances of making the safest decision.

2.    Using the best data available, transportation officials work to determine if the weather event is going to happen before, during, or after school.  Each scenario provides a different problem and various solutions.

a.     If the weather is early morning or late at night, we examine the current conditions and forecasts for the day at about 3:15 AM.  Depending on the situation transportation officials start driving the roads at 4:00 AM.  Staff members drive the entire county.  One travels the south and west to east part of the district while another travels the north, west to east, portion.

b.    If the weather event is supposed to occur during the day, the district has to work with expert sources to decide if the school day can be completed before the event or if the school day needs  to be cancelled or if an early dismissal is warranted.

3.    At about 4:15-4:30, constant contact is established with Boone County, Campbell County, Grant County, Walton-Verona and other surrounding school district transportation officials.  Depending on the track of the storm contact may also be made with Owen and Gallatin County to further access resources to track the storms progress.

4.    At about 4:30-4:45, the Superintendent is briefed on the research and provided the latest thinking on the future conditions so a decision can be made based within the next thirty minutes.

5.    At about 4:45-5:00, more calls are made to neighboring districts to assess conditions and contact is made with all drivers assessing road conditions.

6.    The goal is to make a decision by 5:15 AM.  Transportation staff are reporting at 5:30 and leaving their homes between 5:00 and 5:15.

7.    All decisions are made through the use of constant review from the weather authorities and transportation experts to ensure the safest decision are made for our students.

Community Events and Activities

Shop Small on Saturday, November 24th

In between the Black Friday sales and the Cyber Monday deals is Small Business Saturday (November 24th) - a day set aside to support the small businesses that play a vital role in creating jobs and economic opportunities all across the country.

Small businesses are the back bone of our communities. And when we shop small, we not only get great products and services, but we support our neighbors and strengthen our local economies.

Over the last two decades, small and new businesses have been responsible for creating two out of every three net new jobs in the U.S., and today over half of all working Americans own or work for a small business.
