Greetings!
It's hard to believe we have passed the last day of summer and are moving into fall. The weather is cooler, the trees a little brighter and the summer season of golfing, biking, kayaking, hiking etc are winding down.I am not sure what the winter holds here in Fairmont but I look forward to some skiing and exploring all this area has to offer.
The winter athletes are getting closer to the season starts. I have worked a few training camps and can feel the excitement in the athletes as they prepare to put to the test the hard training months. There is definitely a sense of excitement and anticipation in this, an Olympic year. This is the time to really mentally commit to your training and put doubts aside.Train each day like you want to compete, put everything that is required into each session and then trust you have done the work!Use the time away from the sport to relax, rejuvenate and refuel so you can go back each day with a renewed sense of energy and commitment.
This is the time of year when you can really shore up your mental skills by visualizing your best performances and working on all the mental strategies you need to make sure you can compete like you train. It is literally and figuratively "a new season" so embrace the possibilities and enjoy the ride!
This month's article is on the ups and downs in sports - the peaks and valleys we all face.
Cheers, Jan |

Failure is FertilizerWritten by Nichole DeHart
"Failure is fertilizer" - I thought about this for a long time. Denis Waitley spoke those words at our recent athletes training camp. Failure is fertilizer. These words really stuck with me. At first, I automatically chalked the adage up to a reality that I was already aware of; 'yes, yes, you learn from failing, etc etc.' But, long after Dr. Waitley spoke, I couldn't shake the phrase. What was about this particular saying that had me so enraptured?Read the full article of "Failure to Fertilizer" hereThe Ups and Downs in Sports
Sport is a lot like life - full of ups and downs. If you have chosen to be an elite athlete, or a peak performer, you KNOW that not every day is a "gold medal day". The measure of a great performer is how you respond to the downs. The relationship between sport achievement and coping is one of the biggest mental challenges you will face. If you are looking for consistency in results - it is in your mind...this is where consistency lives! For every high performance individual, sport is not all about medals, cups and wins - it comes with early morning training sessions, intense testing, strict diets, excruciating workouts, and a totally committed lifestyle.
