Greetings!
As we all gear up for winter I hope you are staying on top of your mental game. Through my website you have access to some of the important sports psychology basics. The free articles are a great starting point, and offer insight to help build your mental toughness. I've covered things like competition readiness, focus, going beyond your comfort zone, handling pressure, being patient, and the importance of pre-event routines. This month I tackle "Performance Anxiety" which can really get in the way of peak performance. It points to one of the most important things an athlete needs - CONFIDENCE! Without confidence in your training and skills, it doesn't matter how talented you are or how hard you have worked. Follow me on Facebook and read my blogs for my more personal take on sport related topics. Please feel free to respond and let's get a dialogue started. I am always open for sessions, individual or group, Skype or in person. Cheers, Jan |

Is anxiety getting in the way of "Peak Performance"?
When you feel anxious, your body will experience physiological changes ie) increased heart rate, increased respiration, increased muscle tension, the peripheral body temperature changes - palms sweaty, fingertips cold, increased rapid eye movement, dry mouth. All these things will illicit a stress response - not an IDEAL performance state for competition! You can imagine how this would affect your grip, your vision, your reactions!
Anyone trying to reach an optimal performance state must learn to control this stress/anxiety response. The good news is you CAN! You must learn how to self regulate and use relaxed breathing techniques to reduce the symptoms. Listen to this brief interview with Lindsey Vonn...
