Greetings!

We are pleased to announce that, following audits at both our JHB and CT sites, Warren Chem has retained its ISO 9001:2008 certification - new certificates can be downloaded below and are also available on our website.

A delegation from Warren Chem attended the Vitafoods expo in Geneva in May and we were once again blown away by the dominance of omega-3 in the nutraceutical realm.  More specifically krill oil has come into the spotlight now as a superior source of omega-3.

In this issue we have a look at Superba Krill Oil, and also bring you info on excipients for tablets and capsules from DFE Pharma, new research on astaxanthin in skin cancer, and a new ingredient for glycaemic control.  If you have always wondered about enzymes in supplements and how they can be applied to benefit human health, you will find the white paper below interesting.

We hope you enjoy the read!

Pharma-grade Starch and Superdisintegrants from DFE Pharma Now Available!

Together with our principal DFE Pharma, we are expanding our range of pharmaceutical excipients for tablets and capsules:

SuperStarch® 200 - Partly pregelatinised maize starch

- Mixture of native and pregelatinised maize starch; offers good compactibility and disintegration

- Performs multiple functions: binder, disintegrant, lubricant and flow-aid

Superdisintegrants

Superdisintegrants provide shorter disintegration times at lower dosages than regular disintegrants, and therefore have less impact on other tablet properties such as tablet strength and hardness.  DFE offers two variants:

Primojel® - Sodium starch glycolate

Primellose® - Croscarmellose sodium

Ingredient Focus: Superba™ Krill Oil - The New Generation Omega-3 Source

Omega-3s, especially EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are arguably the most sought after nutritional ingredients in the world today.

A recent consumer study conducted by Discovery Research Group showed that nearly 4 out of 10 supplement users are looking for an omega-3 source other than fish oil.  These particular consumers either don't tolerate fish oil well, citing bad taste and/or aftertaste and fishy burps, or struggle to swallow large capsules.

NewStudy: Astaxanthin Inhibits Development of Skin Cancer

The World Cancer Report estimates that 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers are skin cancer. This rise in prevalence is attributed to increased overexposure of skin to sun/UV light and a reduction in the natural protection from the ozone layer.

A clinical trial recently undertaken by Ranga Rao et al (2013) and published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has characterised and examined natural astaxanthin for its anticancer potency, looking at its effect on UV-DMDA-induced skin carcinogenesis in vivo in healthy albino rats.

Read more about it in Astareal's May Newsletter

The Astareal range is produced by a unique process from the green-red alga Haematococcus pluvialis and contains the potent antioxidant astaxanthin.  Contact us for more info!

White Paper: Enzyme Supplement Applications

Enzyme supplements have the ability to impact the nutritional value of our diets, decrease the occurrence of food intolerances, and to act systemically to support various body systems.  Current medical research has identified a consistent link between inflammation and disease which may also be impacted by certain enzymes.

There are many different enzymes used in dietary supplements but most may be categorised as proteases, carbohydrases, lipases or antioxidant enzymes.

Research continues to identify both new applications and novel enzymes with nutritional benefits.
