Honouring Student Achievement!
|
 | Grade 9 and 10 Music students rock the house!
|
On Thursday evening, our school family came together for Celebration 5773, a night honouring student achievement. Our atrium was standing room only for the fun-filled evening which featured performances from our Music students, delicious treats from our Foods program, and displays and videos highlighting work of our young artists and drama performers. Additionally, students from all grades were honoured for their work in all areas of study.

From start to finish, Celebration 5773 honoured many of the varying talents of our students and highlighted a year's worth of outstanding work. From our theatre productions and Shabbat dinners to our novel studies and science projects, all are the result of the wonderful relationships and collaborations fostered between our students and the hard-working and dedicated teachers of our school. The entire evening was a tremendous success and we thank everyone who attended.

Grade 8 Art Designs Shine!
|
Following discussions about local water use, sewage treatment and grey water, Grade 8 Art students created original designs for the storm and sanitary sewer covers scattered throughout the city. These designs will be entered as part of the City of Vancouver's IRONCLAD competition, inviting artists to design new 'manhole' covers, as part of the city-wide project to separate storm and sanitary sewers.
Students drew a series of options, selected one to be refined and enlarged, and then carved a rubber block to create a pattern using block printing. Each student submitted a black and white print to the city for consideration. Coloured prints are on display in the school.
Art Teacher, Wendy Oberlander submitted the spring Grade 8 class' original designs and Shayna's design was selected as one of the 28 designs on the shortlist, from over 1100 submissions - a great artistic accomplishment!
Shayna's work, along with many other submissions, is on display at the Interurban Gallery (1 East Hastings Street) until Saturday June 8th, 2013.
For more details please visit IRONCLAD. Please vote for the People's Choice Award. Our students' entries are numbers 322 to 335 (scroll way down).

Gabi presents her team's concept to the judges

This week, Ms. Ralph's Grade 9 English classes held their Advertising Expo to conclude their media studies unit. This term the students have explored media and advertising techniques and trends, and in groups they created their own product and marketing campaign. Some of the products included the Binder Pillow (a pillow sewn on to a binder for those late night study sessions!), the InstaFood Printer (a printer that prints food!) and the winning product was Global Gum, a gum that can change a persons accent developed by Oren, Joelle and Jennie under the company name "Chewse". It was an eventful afternoon! Thanks to our teacher judges for joining in the fun!

Congratulations to our very own Solly, Grade 12, for earning his Silver Duke of Edinburgh award last week in Victoria. He was awarded this great honor by the Lieutenant Governor of BC, Judith Guichon, and the Duke of Edinburgh president, Noordin Kamali, at the Government House. Kol Hakavod, Solly!
Dena, Grade 12, was accepted as a participant in a national Girl Guides trip to Churchill, Manitoba and Points North this summer. This is a highly competitive program. Mazal Tov, Dena! Student art work was submitted to IGNITE! the youth driven festival which runs each May at The Cultch. Rachel, Grade 11, had one piece accepted to this juried art show, which is a huge compliment. The Youth Coordinator at the Cultch was very keen to buy the piece! Well done, Rachel!
