Grade 8 Israel Adventure!

The following recap of the Grade 8 adventures in Israel is made up of selections from email updates from Russ Klein, Head of School.

During the first week our students presented our city and our school to the Grade 8 class of Har Vagai which consists of 138 students. The KDHS students showed videos on Vancouver, and videos from KDHS and events that have taken place - such as Simchat Torah and RAC Week. Our students have also visited the site of a horrific helicopter crash that occurred in 1997 killing 73 Israeli soldiers.  This site, and the memorial built in its memory - occurred almost at our sister school and is but a 10 - 15 minute walk from Har Vagai. The memorial is a beautiful place. The Israeli's created a space that allows one to honour the lives of these soldiers, real people, and that also creates a feeling of serenity and hope. Israel is a beautiful country but it is important for all of us to remember that a heavy price has been paid to have and hold a Jewish Homeland.

One afternoon the group boarded jeeps and traveled where no car could routinely travel to see this beautiful region through back roads and trails (and often no road at all).  It was "jeep ride" day and the weather was hot and the drivers big, bold and crazy (all in all a perfect combination for such an adventure). Later in the day after driving to Tel Aviv the students were given 40 minutes to explore the beautiful pier and to meander along the water (Tel Aviv is gorgeous).

More highlights of the trip included Jerusalem Beach, the Independence Hall and the Carmel Market ('Shuk Ha'Carmel'). In Jerusalem, at the Kotel, it was really special the way the guide had the kids who had been there before guide those that had not, eyes closed, over to their first close up view of the Western Wall. Here the kids went up to the wall - most of the boys put on Tefillin - and almost all of the students placed notes in the wall.

The last adventure was a visit to Masada and the Dead Sea. The top of Masada sits about 400 meters above the Dead Sea and the group descended the mountain along 'Snake Path'. It was a wonderful achievement, as the sun beat down fiercely - though we were well armed with hats, sunscreen and water to meet the challenge.

I would really like to thank the Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver and the P2G Committee - without their financial and logistical support this trip would be virtually impossible for us to share with our students.  Also thanks to the amazing staff who cared so well for the students - Dorin (Mama Bear who ran the show), Shoshi and Debbie who both had an endless supply of hugs and kindness to give out.

We look forward to welcoming the team back to school next week!

KDHS Music
It was an exciting week for KDHS music students, which began with the KDHS Senior Jazz Band playing at the Wosk Auditorium for the JCC's Ha'Rikud Festival. Later in the week, the group were able to participate in a professional recording session in the Music room of KDHS, with the help of the Nimbus School of Recording Arts representative Kevin Williams and music teacher Johnny Seguin. The students participating in the recording were Michael. S, Micah. B, Claire. R, Benny. N and alumnus Effi. M.

PE News

On Wednesday, the PE 9 and 10 classes enjoyed a beautiful sunny day biking about 20 kilometers around the Stanley Park Seawall.  Mr. Amram and Mrs. Yaxley were very lucky to have Miss. Lane join the group and add her usual blend of enthusiasm and care. With incredible views of Vancouver, the North Shore Mountains, the ocean and the forest it was a wonderful way to get some fresh air, some exercise and lots of exciting stories as well!  Ask your son or daughter about their day biking around the Seawall!

The Floor Hockey season is well under way with KDHS fielding a Junior and Senior team in this year's league and tournament play. The Senior Boys next game is on Thursday May 2nd at Ecole de Pionniers in Port Coquitlam and then on Monday May 6th at the JCC at 4:35PM. The Lion's Invitational Senior Boys Hockey Championship isbeing hosted by KDHS at Ecole de Pionniers on Tuesday May 21st.

The Junior Boys next game is on Monday May 6th at the JCC against LGCA and then on Tuesday May 7th at Khalsa Old Yale Road.  The Junior Floor Hockey Championships are being hosted by LGCA at the Langley Sportsplex on Monday May 13th. Both teams are poised to do very well this season and are eagerly awaiting their opportunity to hoist another championship trophy!

The Ultimate Frisbee season is also well under way with KDHS fielding a Senior Coed team led by Ms. Hart and Coach Ted Hart.  The Lions placed 6th at a recent GVISAA Senior Ultimate tournament and are heading towards the LMISUL Championships, which take place at St. Georges on Friday May 10th.

The Girls Soccer team has their next game against Regent Christian School on Wed May 8th at 3:30PM at Memorial South Park just east of East 43rd Avenue and Fraser Street (turf field).  The Lions currently have 3 draws and 2 losses.

The Coed Tennis team led by coaches Natalie Moravek and Martin Ferera is looking great this year. With a recent victory over Notre Dame of 7-5 matches, the Lions are competing with schools such as Vancouver College, St. Georges, Little Flower Academy, York House and more.

Good luck to all teams as they progress towards their playoffs.
Balding For Dollars - Cancer Fundraiser
This week, King David had a non-uniform day to support the Balding For Dollars fundraiser at BC Children's Hospital. Balding For Dollars raises money and awareness for children with cancer and blood disorders. The fundraiser was organized by Grade 9 student, Rachel. P, who will be cutting her hair this coming week to support the cause. Well done and congratulations on all of your hard work, Rachel!
